I'm just starting out as guard and I'm not sure how to set my self up! I know I need to sit back and shoot but its just the whole set up of this. I mainly have infantry and a few other stuff, any advice would be appreciated

How did your last game go? And how did you set up for that?

Drew! So not to shabby!
Had my basilisk in a corner near my hq, then had my chimera slightly behind cover with my vets inside. In the middle of the table I had my hwt, either side of that was 20x gaurd, kasrkins on the middle left side far left flank was my sentinels and ratings !!!!!! Thinking back I shouldn't have gone quite so thinly spread

I'd have gone HQ, HWT in the middle. The sentinels on one flank, the Chimera vets on the other. The Kasrkin and 20 man squad in the middle too. The Ratlings I have no idea

Yea makes sense, then creeds orders would be more effective

You then get you chimera and sentinels down the sides and round the back.

The reason I didn't do that was cos where I put creed was I'm passable terrain so gave him cover

How big are the games you're playing? What enemy faction are you tending to play against/have trouble deploying against?

At the mo, I'm not going above 1500pts. My opponents are mainly orks or tyranids.

Bunching up will really hurt you because when the assault elements get there, they've got you. If you can manage to set up two or more deployments of your guys without sacrificing firepower then you can hopefully force the assault elements to split up which will cause them problems.
I haven't played against Tyranids though, so pinch of salt.

against nids you need to make sure you can use your orders properly, bring it down, first rank fire second rank fire come to mind. creed himself is a hellload of points for one model. in fact you could just field a second CCS + master of ordance less points. especially against hordes you'll want as many shots as you can get before they hit your lines. a thing to considers is that with the new rules for rapid fire and first rank fire, second rank fire your infantry squads now have a 2 shot 30" (6"move+24"range)reach.you can use this the first turn to advance upon his lines and try to get a couple of more shots in, followed by a tactical retreat in the subsequent phrases, preferably into difficult terrain.
