I played a friendly game against Orks last night where my hellhound fired a template into a mob of boyz. Since it was the inferno cannon I leapfrogged it into the second and third ranks to get the most boyz under that I could.
The problem was that the Warboss was there in the closest rank (which the template had bypassed) so was looking to take quite a lot of the wounds from the take of the models closest first rule.
Obviously he could still take "look out sirs" but my opponent found it quite a bitter pill that the Warboss was suffering from being in the mob that way (since he also looses his T5 from being in a mixed toughness unit).
Is it correct to take the wounds from the closest models?

I had the same on Monday with a couple of Russ dropping templates, and yes, front rank takes the brunt...

Yes. Closest to the firing Unit. The only major exception is Barrage Weapons.
