I was wondering what everyone thinks a good balance between Infantry, Tanks, Artillery, and all those other fun addons and bits is. I commonly don't take more than 2 flyers in any one game (unless the opponent calls for it) I try to take the 2 Platoon Commands and the four infantry squads, a Colossus, and possibly 2 Russes with Battle Cannons and HB sponsons and two scout sentinels in a squadron. Although at times I might go more infantry heavy and add in HW teams and more guardsman squads, I commonly fight Eldar, Orks, and Marines for the most part so I was just wanting to know peoples opinions on the build and balance.

One of the awesome things about Guard is that Mech, Infantry, and Hybrid are all pretty viable. As long as you have the individual parts tweaked right for the overall build, you can make just about any ratio work.

As a general rule of thumb, I like to keep the mix of troop and heavies to around the 30% mark for lists around 1500pts, everything else just makes up the numbers!

I'd echo Westrider here, I love the fact that you can 'theme' the Imperial guard and have lists which are loaded with a particular type of unit.. personally I like infantry, but you can max out on Airbourne, Armoured (tank heavy) or Mechanised (transport heavy).
This is good as it allows people choice, and more freedom allows more creativity..
There are some units which are a bit stronger (manticore, vendetta) and others that are weaker (punisher, ogryns), but most lists can be competitive without much restriction, and can include weaker units and still function well.

I can say i'm happy for the feedback @ treadiculous that is one of the prime reasons I play guard is the versatility.
