I've had an idea for taking a couple of chimeras as dedicated transports for some infantry squads but then combining the squads as a gunline and sticking heavy flamers on the Chimera's turrets to use as anti-infantry support for my Chimera mounted veterans. My regular opponent is a big Dark Eldar player so I think this idea has some merit. Anyone got any comments?

Good idea.. Chimera are excellent tanks especially when used en masse.
couple of questions:
What does the rest of your army consist of, and how does your mate like to play his Dark Eldar?

Good idea.. Chimera are excellent tanks especially when used en masse. couple of questions: What does the rest of your army consist of, and how does your mate like to play his Dark Eldar? The army is quite mechanised with three chimera mounted vet squads (2 Melta, 1 Plasma) and a small platoon with 3 autocannons. Add to this a command squad set up for bombardment (master of ordanance plus mortar), a manticore, two hydras and a Leman Russ (type varies depending on points, likely enemy and inclination). As to how my friend plays his Dark Eldar, it's usually quite aggressive with multiple wyche and warrior squads trying to close the distance in venoms and raiders supported by ravagers and so far at least, a solitary Razorwing. Attacks tend to be spread across the board rather than concentrated on one flank.

If your disembarking squad are supposed to be getting up in it (flamers, meltaguns, etc) then Heavy Flamer Chimeras can be useful, definitely. Especially compared to a Flamer SWS, as it packs a better punch, is more mobile, and arguably more survivable. Just charge it forward and when your precious infantry start to get threatened roll it in the way and Burn!
Someone here put it as the poor-man's Hellhound and I think that's a decent description.

Am I right in thinking you have 3 infantry squads, a PCS a CCS and 3 vet squads?
That gives a potential 5 chimera to support your vets... I'd probably look at getting 2 and using them to make a melta vet sandwich, that way the melta vet units get the side armour protected and a lot of flame support to tackle any infantry that might surround any AV14 objects you are aiming your melta vets at.

Someone here put it as the poor-man's Hellhound and I think that's a decent description. *Puts hand up* Of course you can! You can use it as a poor mans Hellhound. (Empty, equipped with Heavy Flamers and rush it on up. New vehicle rules make standard vehicles much faster, basically instead of shooting you can move an additional 6 inch in the shooting phase. You can also shoot when moving at cruising speed, well just snap shoot and no flamers.) You can use them as fire support. (3 Chimera's with turret and hull heavy bolters is 165 points. Where as 2 Heavy weapon squads with heavy bolters is 150 points. Not much of a difference for the same weight of fire, increased survivability, movement and transport ability.) Though hull heavy flamer and turret multilaser are probably the best way to go.
