If you buy the Aegis line with an autocannon, you then need to man the guns. Which means that the rest of the squad also has to shoot at the flyers.
I reckon the most cost effective way to man the guns is to buy a three-man ratling squad - BS4 and only (a small but not negligible number of) points.
Your thoughts?

Platoon Command Squad works well for me. Just bare bones and with the Platoon Commander on the gun

Yeah, but firing at BS3 or 4 is better. Well worth sacrificing a bit of Firepower.
More and more, I'm running my Counter-Assault CCS, and they don't really have much shooting to do until after everything's hit, so they can often spend the first few Turns of the Game on the Quad Gun.
In one Game, where my Opponent's only Flyer dropped fast, I edged my Autocannon Platoon over so my Lord Commissar could add the Quad Gun to their fire against ground targets at BS5 ;D

Just a quick note, don't post bare bones point costs, as GW's lawyers have gotten pissy about those kinds of things in the past. Total points costs (such as 130pts for Melta Vets with Carapace) is fine, but the cost of the base unit (such as marbo's price) isn't.

That's actually a really great use for ratlings, good call. They can make the most of the cover saves in fortifications as well!

I have done this with two different squads manning the gun. The first, a minimum amount of Ratlings. BS4, stealth. So, good BS with a 3+ cover save. Down side, if they get hit, they run usually. Second way, I have used a Penal Legion Squad. BS 3, only 4+ save, but, ten of them with stubborn. I prefer the second way to run them, they last longer during the game and rarely run off.

I'm thinking in adding an infantry platoon with a lord commisar using a cammo cloak for giving stealth to the unit, but I got a question, how many troops can fit inside an Aegis? Right now I don't have a line to test it. And I would man the quad it with the platoon officer (BS4)

How many models, because I was thinking a full 5 squad blob, because with the commisar they would have a cover of +3 and even charging units might be killed by that many snapshots, but if they don't fit then it won't work.

I am a little curious how long each section is. There are 4 long sections which are 5" each and 4 short sections, which are 2" each. Edit : I will be using a CCS all equipped with laspistol and ccw. They have 2 bodyguards and a medic for a bit of extra survivability. Even though I could have got 3 mortar teams for the bodyguards and medic.... At double force org lists I will have 2 aegis lines; one with a quad gun and the other with the icarus lascannon. |

If you just set it out as a line, rather than wrapping it around, you can easily keep 30-40 dudes in Cover behind it.
A couple of Games ago, my Opponent had 20-some Culties in one that was a closed loop, and still had plenty of room to spread out and avoid Blasts.

You don't get an Icarus with the aegis line, do you? I don't have my codex with me, but I thought they were only an option with the bastion...

Yeah, you can upgade the Aegis D/L to have either a comms Relay, Quad Gun or an Icarus Lascannon So at 2000pts you could have two Aegis DL with 2 Quad Guns! Danger Rod |

what about Marbo ? not so expensive BS5 guy but more costly than a CCS, however he does have a better BS and is a little bit cheaper than a Lord commissar with the same BS I would go for the loner with the best BS  |

Don't forget that you want something strong enough to fend off a Backfield Harassment Unit. A couple of Games ago, I had an Assault Squad finish off the Unit my Opponent had manning his Quad Gun and (since they were now down to a couple of dudes and picking up the Line Breaker Point for me) just chilled there and used the Gun to take pot-shots at his Predator. Getting shot with your own gun sucks.

Does the precision shot rule apply, if say a sergeant were to fire the quad gun at an enemy infantry unit? Unless my maths is wrong (which it may be as calculator isn't working) there would be a 99.9% chance of getting at least 1 six with 4 twin-linked shots, which could be quite useful getting a shot to place on special weapons/characters.
(My maths in case anyone was wondering,
p(6 on 4D6)=4(1/6)=0.666
p(>4 on 4D6)=4(3/6)=2
p(6 on 2D6)=2(1/6)=0.333
p(6 altogether)=0.666+0.333=0.999)

About a 70% chance...
One shot has a (1/6)+(3/6*1/6) = 25% chance of a 6 to hit. So 75% chance of not getting that 6.
Four shots, so 0.75^4 chance of not getting a 6 on any dice, 0.3164 and some change.
68.4% chance of getting at least one 6 on four BS3 shots with rerolls.
(and at BS4, that drops to 63.4%)

It's in the bastion box, which I have also, but you can put the comm relay (also from the bastion kit) on your quad guns. Originally I was going to use my bastion for my army. I mean it is an immovable AV14 vehicle that can house 2 squads and has elevation, but the building damage rules and charts/ whatnot made me think twice about that. Plus it would be so easy to lose to a determined marine assault. |
