Hi all,
As we all know the games we play are ruled by the measuring stick or tape measure. But I have to ask anyway, How hard is it to use a tape measure?
Why am I asking this I hear, well I've just obtained a new fish tank. My wife told me I could get a bigger tank as long as it didn't cost too much. I managed to find an advert for a 4ft fish tank on freecycle, great I thought, person offering it agreed to get it to me but I would have to pay petrol. I agreed and got the tank delivered, got it inside and looked at it, looked at mine, looked at it again, you know how this goes on. Then I thought that's not right, got my tape measure out and yes that's right, it's not 4ft it's only 3ft and to make things worse it's not as high.
I know I got this for free and have little right to complain but OMG measure things before you advertise them!

To be honest if I'd known the right size I'd have said no. I even asked her for the exact sizes.

Slap them with a tape measure. It's the only solution.

My friend is a college lecturer and she can't believe the number of kids* who think that when you measure something you start from the 1 on the ruler, not 0. Maybe the person you got the tank from started from 1 ft.
* this is a college so all the kids are 16+.

I was trying to come up with a plausible excuse for her and only came up with, "She must be stupid."

You mean you dont know about the unique fish tank measuring system?
Take the hypotenuse of the cross section, square root it's length, and divide the resulting number by the square root of the short side of the rectangle! Oh and don't forget to +1 ft to whatever value you get.

I thought she might have measured it the way you measure a TV, diagonally.

Maybe she didn't measure it but remembered it being said to be a 4ft tank?

Reading a tape measure is a skill, perhaps a skill this person just doesn't possess.
We have all made the same or similar mistakes; none of us are perfect.
