History
Tartarus was an Industrial World in the Koronus Expanse, mining operations and the production of Imperial weaponry were the planet’s primary source of revenue. The warrior caste of Tartarians provided ideal candidates and served as the recruitment grounds for a newly raised Adeptus Astartes Chapter referred to as the War Machines.
Invaded by the forces of Chaos for both it’s industrial wealth and gene seed, distress signals took ten years to reach Terra’s communication lines. When the Ordo Malleus arrived they discovered a battered world, scarred with orbital bombardments, radioactive rubble and the aftermath of a decade of attrition warfare.
Those few survivors were shells of their former selves, their resistance against the taint of Chaos had eroded their humanity and rendered them cold and lifeless. Their eyes seemed to look straight through people and into nothingness. The Ordo Malleus recognised the Chapter’s potential in a private war against the forces of Chaos and incorporated the War Machines into a coalition with elements of the Grey Knights Chapter.
Equipment
The War Machines wear Mark III Iron power armour and use Ferrox pattern boltgun systems, both of which were manufactured domestically on Tartarus until the outbreak of war. After a decade of warfare against unspeakable horrors the Chapter’s equipment is battle damaged and some components have been replaced with parts taken from the aftermath of each conflict. They are veterans, practically incapable of reintegrating into Imperial society, they are outcasts and specialists in the fight against Chaos.
Dreadnought sarcophagus are heavily employed by the War Machines who have witnessed many great warriors fall against the archenemy. These heroes, grieviously wounded were interred within the scarce dreadnought armour available in Taratrus’s factories.
The Chapter has not had access to the newer, more innovated range of the Imperial arsenal and have therefore become accustomed to their slightly outdated equipment. As a result Terminator Armour is practically none existent and the War Machines are dependent on their Grey Knight allies for inter galactic travel.
