I understand this kind of thread surfaces every once in a while, but I really have to ask for help.
As you might have noticed, I have recently purchased new battleforce box goodness, with which I will create a new army. I haven't decided on much apart from using the Carapace Armour upgrade wherever applicable (roll on veteran troopers) as well as the Extra Armour upgrade.
But I'm stumped on what to do for Rough Riders.
Even though I don't intend to play with this army either (too much learning for my tastes, I already do enough of that during office hours), I do want to model Rough Riders sooner or later. Of course, if you're surrounded by heavily armoured tanks and troops, a simple horse won't do. I don't want to do the typical bikes, either, as they seem to be the go-to choice for none-horse RRs.
Now, help me think. If you were a Rough Rider from a planet whose troopers are all donned in heavy armour, what would you ride into battle?

Tricky... I have seen quad-bikes, but they're bikes. I'm wondering about armoured steeds, not quite to the robotic level of the galaxy rangers, but since your men are humans + armour, should they steeds not be steed + armour? It is difficult to think of something that would provide the speed associated with cavalry and would also be armoured. I know this is a bike, but it's worth looking at... www.warseer.com/forums/showthread.php?91442-RED-ONE%94-Imperial-Airborne-Assault-Forcemaybe a very light weight dune buggy could work?.. the difficulty is that the rider uses a lance on the way in, maybe this could be represented by a one of grenade round on the drive in?.. Slaanesh Cold Ones?.. I have seen an army using the Star Wars models to make the rough riders which looked quite cool, not sure what creature it was though and google hasn't been too helpful in the hunt for images so I can't post one to show you...

I would say go for Mounts of the Death Riders of Krieg. their mount is a heavily genetically modified version of a horse to bare the worse battlefield conditions.

I like that thread, Tread.
"You do know that big red one is actually an infantry regiment though, right?"
Yeah... I think he might have a clue ;D
Plus of course the models are pretty well done.

I think I might have the answer. Remember Saving Private Ryan? Reiben drove this small halftrack-esque vehicle in the last few scenes of the movie. I think I am going to make that kind of thing my rough riders.

You could always model Kurt Cobaine on a Flying Pink Dragon as your Sergeant.... I bet no one else has one of those.....
But on a serious note, I think that the Half Tracks could be an interesting concept. I would also consider the idea of maybe using Cold Ones and model some Armour Plating on the Cold Ones.
I hope the second part of the post may have been at least a little bit fruitful. The first part wasn't an intended troll.... I'm just bored and on a steady decent into madness ad thought I'd share the gift a little ^.^ I demand a Progress log on the Half Tracks if they Happen!!

I could always find you and steal all your beer, Dave. Actually, if I ever get enough cash to buy a Catachan battleforce box, I will make a very obscure regiment that nobody knows of and use cold ones for their rough riders.

They were (for me at least) quite hard to convert. I needed 2 Catachan boxes to get the right bits in order to make something half way decent. At the same time, I sort of gave up half way through because I didn't think it fit in as well as I thought. Some I've seen online that inspired me looked... not-for-me when I tried to re-visit inspiration. If you decide to make a miniature wheeled vehicle, try something like this. Excuse the photo size and that it has my face on, I'll have to link it rather than post it.

Hmm...thanks Optimat, that might be an idea. That reminds me of the Russian...halftrack esque vehicles you see in a flashback of WW2 in Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 3. It's more a troop carrier or kit hauler than a rapid attack vehicle, though.

Why not just sculpt some flak armour on some horses?
I think a few squarish looking plate will 'cadian' them up a bit? Or am I missing the point?

Four words: Space Marine Scout bike
Remove all the skulls on the arms, Use Cadian torso or others.
Place a nice little eagle on the front of handle and bam.

I'd ride a horse, look at knights and jousters... They're heavy armed badasses!

for me, the red one bikes are a bit too skinny, they look more like riding in the dirt on a good Sunday then going to war in a hostile environment...
only problem i see with heavy armor bikes.. they only have 2 tires, massive armors thus weight so they can't get trough anything other than concrete or roads of some sorts or am i totally missing the point? (found a nice plated chopper on the ebays, will make a pict if you want, someone might recognize it..)

If you were a Rough Rider from a planet whose troopers are all donned in heavy armour, what would you ride into battle? How about those new mini-griffons that the empire knightly orders ride on? They are a bit fantasy but with a bit of work on the rider, etc, they could look great. Edit - another thing is those huge lions that come with the high elf chariot sets (I think), but they're really expensive from bitz sites.

Sorry for the late post, I've been going through some of these older posts to see what people are up to. Don't know where you are on these, but I thought I'd share what I did for some RR I used the grenade launcher as a lance/spear-gun. -Steve

I think syphon has now seen these, judging by the post in the Curiosu Constructs thread, but I do hope to have them in production early in the new year - the master is currently at the printers.
