Didn't see a thread on this so I figured I'd start one.
Basically, you play as the commander of a Paramilitary group created to fight alien invaders. You are backed by a few countries, which give you money and demands protection in return. You can get a squad of up to 6 characters, humans or unmanned vehicles (mini tank things called S.H.I.V.S.). Using your limited resources you are tasked with defending our home as best as you can. When your men die, they die for good.
Basically, it's awesome. I've got hours and hours poured in already and while I have put up a good fight I don't know if victory is actually possible anymore. I lost all but one man during a particularly nasty firefight, close quarters against nine mutons (big tanky brutes). Oh and the game is a turn-based strategy game.
Has anyone else played it yet?

I racked up a few hundred hours in UFO Aftermath, it was a spiritual successor of the original XCOM. I've started downloading it via steam, haven't played it yet.

I got it the day after it came out (US release dates, woo!) and just finished my first play-through, admittedly on easy. It really is a lot of fun, and the fact that you sort of get attached to your soldiers as they rank up makes it all the more intense during fire fights when they get shot at. During my play-through, I only lost two guys, and ended up with two psonic- capable soldiers (one american woman and one british one).

You finished it already? Is it short? Did you play as a completionist or just plowing through it? Better or worst than the first one? What didn't you like? Sorry, just a lot of questions.

I never played the first one, so I have no idea how it stacks up. I did all the research, got almost all the foundry improvements, and captured every alien species, although I didn't capture any of the robots (my policy was "apply maximum firepower at range" whenever I encountered them). I also didn't fully upgrade my base either, but that's because I didn't need to to get what I wanted or needed. As for length, it's probably close to 20-30 hours of game play for single player, at least on Easy.
As for what I didn't like, that's a very short list. I would have liked accents corresponding to the country the soldier supposedly came from, a bit more armor customization (Although I understand if you pre-ordered, you can do that), and some sort of weapon range where you could test the effects of the weapons you just researched. The non-essential missions could be a bit repetitive (as is the case with all games),and I'd also love to see a co-op mode where you and a buddy command a fire team, but that's just me. Those are just minor things, though. Overall it's pretty damn good.

I'm with Reds. I haven't completed it but I believe that is because of a glitch I've found. I don't want to spoil anything so I wont mention it but I could also be doing something wrong, more play tomorow will tell me for sure.
But yeah, the game is pretty dang awesome. I purchased it on a wim and I am really glad that I did. Already have 20 something hours put in and I don't plan to stop too soon. Maybe to play a little Dishonored...but then more Xcom. It's pretty addicting.

Man, I have had dozens of bugs and had to restart my game over perhaps 5 times. I kept getting some stupid error that every time I selected an icon I would get charged funds. Put me in bankruptcy, what the hell? cloud.steampowered.com/ugc/938131793964286477/EC5F0A9CBF58CE6BD33E1BA9C32375BD5FF33BED/ [/img] That's what my unit looks like, couple of little tidbits that I would have liked. Namely voices for characters from their relevant countries and wearing a helmet giving me a miniscule bonus, sure you can customize your guy however you please but damn my guys aren't fools.

I just want to know: How much is it like the original? Or are all you people young'uns that can't even remember the original? (It's on Steam, you know, for about 2 quid nothing)

So, a few tips that people might find useful.
- Satellites. Build as many of them as possible as fast as possible. It's worth putting off some squad upgrades in the here and now to help offset panic in other nations. Wait to deploy them just before council reports, since that's when nations withdraw from the council.
- You can probably afford to forgo lasers all together and research light plasma instead, especially since Thin Men are fairly easy to capture, giving you their weapons in the process.
- If you click on a soldier's gun icon in the bottom right while they're dashing, they can reload at the end of the move. Just be careful to wait until they're more or less at their location, as sometimes the game has them stop in their tracks and do it.
- Run and Gun + Rapid Fire for Assaults is a really, really great combination, particularly with Alloy cannons.
- Once you're over the difficulty hump at the start of the game and have plasma and titan armor, it's worth using your current team to cultivate a second string team of vets. The advantages are that it lets you rank up any psionic recruits not in your first string, your new recruits don't have any will reductions from being critically wounded like your main team might, and you can build the recruits with talents that are more useful in the late game, such as HEAT ammo, that weren't in the early game.
- When attacking supply barges, always hit them from the front or back, never from the side. It just doesn't end well.
