I'm wondering where 40k takes place.. I've been looking at star maps and stuff recently and noted that we on earth and its solar system are part of the sagitarius arm of the galaxy but am wondering if 40k just covers the arm of our galaxy, the entire galaxy or goes out to encounter other galxies..
I find it difficult to grasp this from looking at the various star maps given in the books, with the exception of the Nid codex where it shows the galaxy in a side on view being attacked by the tendrils.
Thoughts, pictures and maps most welcome!

40k covers the entirety of our galaxy. If you check the maps of the Imperium in the rulebooks, you'll see that it matches up reasonably well with pictures of the Milky Way.
