Hi everyone, new to the site. Little bit of a story to tell before I ask my questions, so please stick with me.
Had my first couple of games with my new guard army today at my local gaming club, and am really liking them. I got into guard because way back when the Kroot Mercenaries list was released I wrote some fiction about an Imperial Guard Regiment with Kroot allies, put it up on the Black Library's old forum if anyone remembers that. (I plan to stick it on here given the chance)
The more I thought about it, the more I liked the characters I'd built in that fluff and so decided, finally, about 9 years later, to start an IG army. Building the army up, I'm going to take some Kroot as allies thanks to the new rules.
Couple of questions: A) What's the most effective way to run them? B) Do Kroot actually have an HQ choice in the Tau Empire Codex? (It's the one I don't have annoyingly)
Note I'm doing this primarily for fluff reasons and because I think the models are cool more than real hard-hitting tactical power. Otherwise I'd take Space Wolves.
Look forward to your responses!

From what I can see on the GW site, the Kroot have no HQ unit. That said, I wouldn't give up hope just yet. I see several solutions to your problem.
1) Just take a Tau HQ choice and claim that he defected to the Imperium and is allowed to live as long as he and his pet kroot are useful.
2) Pick a Tau HQ unit but the model a Kroot 'count as'-model for it.
3) Use the Kroot models as a unit from the IG codex. Suitable options include veterans with stealth, penal legioneers and conscripts. Even Rough Riders could work if you mount them on Krootoxen.

The tau empire codex requires you take both a battle suit commander and a firewarrior team as mandatory. The latest Tau FAQ says this is also true for detachments.
Unfortunately under the current rules you can't do purely kroot allies.
but you could use stormtroopers or something as firewarriors and convert some awesome imperial mechs for the battlesuits and use those for your mandatory non kroot tau allies.

Hello, Cap'n Tightpants.
With your opponents permission you could use the old kroot mercenary codex, counting them as Tau on the allies matrix. That could be feasible. 2 hqs, 2 troops and some other bits and bobs at 2k with double force org lists.

Cheers guys. It didn't even occur to me to look at the GW website, my brain is malfunctioning badly thisevening.
Both options sound really good. I wanted to add Penal Legion to my army anyway, but was scratching my head on how to do it differently than the 'catchacans with orange jumpsuits' route a lot of people have gone, so that seems the most obvious choice for me right now. I also want to combine Forward Sentries and Sergeant Harker in a vet unit, so that is also a good option.
Kroot in a stolen Battlesuit? Could be interesting... Kroot firewarriors would also be fun. Unfortunately I've not collected Tau so there's a distinct lack of bits for those conversions in my collections. Imperial mechs would be awesome, and I'm sure vets who've 'borrowed' some Tau weaponry would be pretty amazing if I can scrounge bits up for that.
Thanks for your help guys. If I sort something out I'll definitely stick some pics up in the gallery.
EDIT: Missed your post Cheminhaler, my bad. I did think of using the Kroot Mercenaries list (I've still got that WD!), it wouldn't be a problem at my local club I'm sure, but if I do fnally choose to go to tournaments etc. I don't want to have to dump that part of my army. Might use it for a bit with proxies just while I work out what to do.

the "borrowed" tech-route could also result in your catachan being declared traitors by some purist inquisitor, easely explaing loyalist vs loyalist battles!

Thanks guys. I've decided to go for Kroot as Penal Legion squads, Desperadoes + Scouts + Stubborn makes it the perfect fit really. Just hope I get Psychopaths or Knife Fighters to make it fit...
Stuck some paint on them today so might put some photos in that section of the forum when they're done.
