I have just spent the last 2 hours on the edge of my seat and am close to a heart attack. Firstly Arsenal go 3 goals down in 20 mins, then 4 and get one back before half time. They draw level after 96 mins of football. It goes to extra time and Arsenal finally take the lead, shortly after Reading bring it level again. I'm sat getting ready for penalties when Arsenal take the lead again, Reading have several chances but Arsenal get a break and score 7 - 5 Arsenal final score. I'm too old for this, and it gets worse, we have Man Utd on Saturday!
So I ask, Why do we do this to ourselves?

i dont see how anyone can get worked up over a dumb game like football... football is fun to play with mates on a hot day at the park... but sitting there at home getting all sweaty at a bunch of retards diving around ... i just cant understand...
although im not ignorant enough that i wouldnt understand that 12 goals in one game is quite a few...
.. but still...
football...
its just...
so...
boring.

Football is full of over paid b!tches! I prefer sports that actually make you sit on the edge of your seat.
Like: Motor bike road racing (isle of man TT)
But what ever floats your boat.

I don't mind watching bike racing but it's more to see if there is a crash. Other than that I see it as just driving round in a circle, yes I know it's not always a circular track.
I do agree footballers are over paid though.

Well... I watched the game last night Foster, but I don't particularly like footy. I am more of a Rugby lad myself, having played it at a Semi-Proffessional level. As said above, I think football players are a bunch of over paid, stuck up, pompous twats! Rant Over But on the other hand, my entire family, bar mabe me admy closest cousin, follow football religiously. And the atmosphere in my Nans house when a Sheffield Derby ison is unbeatable. Me and Ash, neither really liking football go just for nutss and Giggles. And then theres Motor-Sport.... Especially bike racing, always garunteed to get the adrenaline going!!! Dave

I suspect a lot of people of all ages are into footy, but personally I'm not one. A good friend of mine watches religiously; he's into Newcastle, Panathinaikos and Celtic but regularly gets into the VIP boxes to watch Arsenal matches, because he has connections who are madly into the game. Actually it's shocking how much people spend on vip boxes and tickets, I would have just bought an entire GW store with all that..
But I understand why people get worked up over sports - screaming at a pitch is a great stress reliever after a hard day.

I have no strong feelings about sport, but what I do hate is when people expect me to be, like when our new local postman did his first rounds a few weeks back, he asked what football team I supported, when I said I wasn't interested, he said, "into rugby then, not much of a fan myself, but it's good game".
On the subject of footballer's wages, I had to do an essay on it, and my teacher gave me the challenge of concluding that they aren't (so I could improve my analytical abilities I believe), and on further reading and interpretation, there are quite a few reasons why their wages are fair, and the benefits of their high wages are important. I think that the amount of money spent on buying players is worse, I know they capped it, but it still is stupid IMHO.

I too, find football a rather asinine and inadvisable pastime.

i love the way americans renamed football , soccer cos they couldnt find an original name to call thier sport...
and why did they call it american football, when they mostly use their hands? surely the name football would imply a game where you use your feet.... like handball is called that cos they use thier hands... so why call american football , football? if anything, its more like rugby with armour... so why not american rugby?
seems a little derp to me.

Two reasons. First, because we knew it would annoy the Europeans. Second, we thought the name deserved to be assigned to a real sport, not one where grown men roll around on the grass pretending to be maimed for life after an opposing player farts on them. In all seriousness, I do think the name is a bit silly, all in all. I'd say "Cricket" is a sillier name for a sport if it wasn't for the fact that it's not really a sport at all, just death by boredom. Reds

Steelers suck! Redskins rule!! (Jk, the redskins actually really suck, it's rough being a skins fan)
But on topic, I have a few friends stateside who are obsessed with football (soccer), and like Chem said they spend a bunch of money whenever the European teams come to play in America.
Personally I am a hockey fan. All the speed and hitting of football, with the finess and skill of soccer with none of the diving!

The Redskins are making me sad this year. I'm not a fan, per say, but I like RG III a lot, and think he deserves a better performance from the rest of the team than what they've been giving him. Not a fan of the Steelers (or the Eagles, but that's because I despise Vick), but the only team I outright detest are the Patriots.

Some of the time they're real injuries, it's not always faking. Studded football shoes hurt a lot when applied to someone else's body parts at speed. Footballers don't wear armoured suits, either.

I see I started a bit of a pandemic here, any how I've never really been a fan of SOCCER for the reasons Reds stated and it's just 90 minutes of covering a butt load of ground to get to the goal and completely biffing a shot. The commentators are annoying, the crowd is obnoxiously loud with their horns and chants, so loud it takes away the "enjoyment" if you will, of watching the match. It's just a yawn fest to me. My brother is a fan and him and his buds are always playing FIFA. I however still just can't get into it.
Steelers lineup are getting up there in age, most injured. It's been a rough season to watch, but when you're a die hard fan you just roll with the punches, keep up the support, and hope things turn for the better. As for my college team, the Fightin' Irish are busting heads this season 9-0!!!!! Notre Dame has really pulled the stops and have been keeping me on the edge of my seat nearly every game. GO IRISH!!!

Steelers have been old for awhile though, I think I've heard that comment for the last four years. I think their biggest problem right now is that Ward isn't around and they just havent found a replacement that fits well with that team. And I think it was last week that I heard Polamalu was retiring at the end of the season so there goes a good safety. Unfortunately it's a sad year for sports in Pittsburgh. With the Steelers sucking and no hockey, its gonna be a long winter.

The term soccer originated in England, first appearing in the 1880s as an Oxford "-er" abbreviation of the word "association".[6] Within the English-speaking world, association football is usually called football (colloquially footy and occasionally footer or soccer) in the United Kingdom, and mainly soccer in Australia, Canada, New Zealand, and the United States. Other countries may use either or both terms, and may also have local names for the sport. So we Brits came up with the term soccer.
