My IG WIPs

The first GW minis I ever got was the box of 36 plastic IG troops, with the awesome Napoleonic art of them advancing in rank under fire on the box. That was back in mid 1990s and I now have a Catachan based army, a Cadian based army, about a dozen vehicles, a small Black Templar force, a Brettonian army and a Warriors of Chaos army and they're all still WIPs.

This post is going to be pic intensive, and I didn't even get everything photographed because our 4yo son wanted me to stop and play more Rampage on original XBOX with him, and painting progress will likely be slow so apologies in advance.

Here are the old plastic troopers, I plan on using them as a unit of 30 conscripts. You can also see the old Basilisk crew (I have 2 Basilisks but only 1 old enough to have come with the crew, and a metal Cadian mortar squad including 2 slightly converted Griffon crew members.


Here are pics of two old metal Sgts that I converted with some WFB bits and Cadian bits, a pair of SM Scout legs and very old Ork bolt pistols to make bodyguards.




Here is a generic Artillery officer or possible MoO.


This is a generic officer made with an old Rough Rider command torso, plastic legs from an old box of 36 trooper adn other bits.

A pair of converted Sgt Bastonne figs, the one with the beret has Defiance Games marine legs, the other has SM scout legs.



A pair of Al Rahem conversions, one with a SM SW Scout head, Khorne Berzerker plasma pistol, SM Scout legs and the other has High Elf legs, HE sword blade stuck on a Cadian Sgt chainsword with the hilt from an Empire Militia sword.


Veteran Squad (full squad not done yet) with MaxMini torsos, SM Scout legs, SM SW scout and SM scout heads, the resin beret head came from a set of 5 I ordered from the WarStore, maybe MAS or Secret Weapon I forget.



A Pig Iron NCO with IG head, pistol/hand and an old metal Necromunda Orlock chainsword/hand, and two Foundry Street Violence figs with weapon swaps/mods (there is a second female fig where I swapped an MP5 barrel with a cut down lasgun barrel but it broke off while in storage).



Last but never least, Marbo, 3rd party head, Ork tankbusta bomb, SM scout boltgun/laspistol mashup, SM scout legs, Catachan torso and arms.

Plastic Necromunda Orlocks I got off Ebay. The last one I converted by trimming the lasgun arm for use instead of one of the pistol arms, I added a pistol mag to the lasgun I think I need to remove it and use a lasgun mag instead.

Necromunda Goliath gangers with heavy bolters. I want to add the bipod to the the HB on the right where the hand is palm down so it looks like he's setting it down, the original model was holding a shotgun but I didn't order the shotgun because I planned to use the HB instead.


Reaper Chronoscope mini with a hand swap and pistol mag added to laspistol.


First real weapon coversion I did, Catachan HF with Cadian flamer pack and HF sponson, no greenstuff just trimming, I'm very proud of how well the left arm position came out.



The tank rider that came with the LR Exterminator tank kit, ork gun and arm, DE bayonet blade, the "bone" is the handle from an Ork axe.

There are more Catachan models that have not been assembled, I have a Straken conversion planned but not put together yet, another officer based on the old metal Catachan pfist officer that uses an old plastic Ork powerclaw. I also have some more Cadian based officer models, I plan on converting Macharius to a Creed counts as, put feet on Pask and use him as a fleet officer, etc. I also have two squads of Stormtrooper models, 2 basilisks, Griffon still on sprues, Hellhound, LR Exterminator, LR Demolisher, LR, 2 old chimeras one still one sprues, 2 sentinels partially assembled.

Obviously I have a lot of painting to do. This board has a lot of inspiring armies posted and I keep wanted to do more cool conversions inspired by you guys and others so it's hard to force myself to slow down and paint more.

Very interesting and eclectic collection you have here!
I have always loved the old Imperial Army guys. Even if they look like they should be on a 40K equivalent of a Blood Bowl pitch.

Thanks for the kind comments guys. I've always thought it was cool to look at how GW's minis have changed, from plastic to metal and back to plastic. It's also a little embarassing that I've had the army for that long and still haven't finished it. I want to get some more pictures taken, show the old plastic troops next to the current ones, the old ones are tiny by comparison. I want to post a pic of the Exterminator LR that's mostly painted because I still need to choose an urban camo scheme for my Cadians, right now all I know is it will consist of blues and grays.

@ivory I'm gonna try to do them justice. I'm going to try a wet pallete and keep thing simple, do my best to be neat and let washes pull it all together.

cheminhaler Thanks, I've tried to incorporate some elements to make some of the squads look more mean and feral drawing inspiration from the older Codices stuff like the Karnak Skull Takers and Ork Hunters. The musculature on the minis makes giving them ork weapons look decent enough scale wise.

@sgt Walters I appreciate the kind words, I think the SW Scout heads and the MaxMini torsos look good together, they look mean but still high tech. While I like the torsos and the integral backpacks I did have to do a fair amount of trimming, shaving and filing to get the arms to fit right because the pouches on the backpack straps stick out further than the relatively smooth GW torsos.

A while ago I picked up the following sets of minis from Foundry Miniatures Street Violence range. I've converted some of them with a few others still to be done. The two models tharmed with a Steyr AUG aren't going to be converted because I can't figure out how to convert the gun to look more WH40K.
