I have been wanting to craft some unique terrain recently out of Styrofoam but I haven't a clue on what to use, I know I will need something called a hot knife but I am in the dark about it all, any help or advice on the matter would be greatly appreciated.

Styrofoam has a low durability, it is easy to damage and is difficult to paint as most paint will either flake off or dissolve the Styrofoam.
Its a shame, since you get such cool looking styrofoam packaging round tv's, dvd players etc.

its not diffucult to coat the syrofoam with pva glue and it allows it to be spray painted , then the acrylic paint stays on just fine...... it is still easy to damage though

I use a hot knife but i cant get straight lines even with its guide tool, cant figure it out.
And then i cover it with a layer or polyfiller so its tough and can be easily painted. Also if you give it a thick coat of polyfiller you can damage it on purpose to look cool. Most people recommend the ready made tubs but i have tons left over from doing up my flat and the power is just as good.
