[Chapter One] Into the Ruins
Colour Sergeant Schneider of the 72nd Panzer Grenadiers of Himmel led his squad into the battered ruins of his home city of Hafen. The ruins around him looked like nothing he remembered as a Child. Strewn mutilated Corpses scattered around, screamed out in his mind, with the voices of those he knew and loved. The Sergeant doubled over and vomited violently in front of his squad.
"Sergeant, are you okay"? Came a gruff voice from behind him. It was his 2IC, Corporal Lenderman. Lenderman was a promising young soldier, he possessed a great tactical mind and was respected throughout the squad, even though he was quite a way younger than the other men. To go with his Mind, he was built like a Leman Russ. His massive frame enabling him to carry a Heavy Bolter with ease as a personal weapon.
Standing up, Schneider turned to the youngster and replied "Yes, I'm fine. It must be travel sickness, I hate those damned Chimera's". Lenderman was no fool, and knew the Sergeant was lying, but, also knew there was no point pursuing the matter. Anyway, there was no need to pick fights with each other when Plague Marines had been seen in the city. The Patrol Continued to move cautiously down the broken street. Their Chimera had been hit by some form of IED made from a Melta Bomb, blowing the track clean off.
A distorted voice came over the Vox, carried by Private Wolk, "Platoon 13, Sit rep now"! The Voice was that of Lord Commissar Heiken, an over ambitious fool mostly, who was cold hearted and saw his men as 'tools'. "13 Here, Since the Chimera was hit, We've had nothing" Wolk answered calmly. " The voice answered almost Instantly, "Platoon 9 have made contact with an unknown enemy, move to there position now". Schneider sighed. Platoon 9's last known position was 2 Click's back the way they had just come. "Saddle up lads, we've got to go and bale Platoon 9 out of some trouble. Keep your heads down and we'll all be fine. These Plague Marines are tough, but they still bleed, and if they Bleed, they die." Schenider said in a confident, somewhat experienced voice.
The Truth was Schneider had seen combat against Plague Marines before, and he was terrified of them. His former commander and mentor, Colour Sergeant Tolga, had saved him from what should have been a fatal blow from one of the Marines. As the Plague Knife was thrusted at Schneider, Tolga threw himself in front of it, allowing Schenider to get clear and gun down the abomination. The incident, although having happened 20 years ago hung fresh in the Grizzled veterans mind, haunting him.
As the Patrol reached the last known location of Platoon 9, a full Infantry Platoon, the squad halted. Schneider stood up alone and drew his power sword from its scabbard. Aiming his Bolt Pistol at the entrance to a ruined building, overlooking the position. He carefully stepped inside, looking in every corner for Hostiles. Once he was satisfied the Building was clear, he signaled for the squad to follow. The Veterans knelt behind a ruined wall as Schenider took out his Binoculars. Observing the situation, Schneider looked down. At this reaction, the men knew the news would be grim.
Flekk, one of the Squads Snipers looked down through his scope. His face Immediately turned pale and the 37 year old man threw up allover his Long Las, before slumping down in horror at what he had seen. Corpses of the Soldiers were strewn, mutilated, almost as if they had been devoured. Blood was allover the ruined courtyard. Flekk raised himself and looked again. As he observed, he saw a figure stumble from the ruins across the courtyard. It was that of the Platoon's Junior Officer, Lieutenant Helker. He was covered in blood and unarmed, but seemed to be okay. "Schneider, we've got a survivor"! Schneider lept to his feet and looked down his Binoculars once more.
"Wolk, get on the Vox and tell the Pig our situation and that we have found Helker"! The Vox Operator did as he was ordered. Schieder and 4 of the Veterans left to secure the Lieutenant, While Lenderman, Flekk, the other 2 Snipers and Wolk Provided Over watch. As the men emerged into the courtyard, they found that Helker had come to a halt in the centre of the courtyard and was just sanding there. The Fire team proceeded to advance. "Helker... Luitenant Helker"? The Lieutenant turned to face the squad of soldiers.
Schneider gasped. He looked terrible. Bite Marks were torn from allover his bottom jaw. Schneider had never seen anything like this. The Injured Lieutenant started to run towards the men. "Harms, get the Lieutenant bandaged up". Schneider turned to see Helker sprinting at them.... But he looked aggressive and seemed to be growling. "Halt! Identify yourself!" Yelled the Sergeant. The Lieutenant continued to sprint. Schneider raised his Bolt Pistol and took aim at the Officer. "I'm warning you stand your..." A bolt erupted from the Chamber, hitting the Lieutenant in the head, sending bits of skull, flesh and brain everywhere.
As the Shot echoed around the courtyard, another sound rose above it. It was an odd sound, it sounded like hundreds off feet dragging along the floor at the same time. Suddenly, hundreds of figures started to emerge from the ruins. Civilians and Soldiers alike, all covered in blood and bite marks like the Lieutenant. The five soldiers stood there in shock. "Sarge.. what do we do"? Asked Harms. "For the first time, Schneider faltered in the face of the enemy. "I... I don't know Harms..." He replied nervously. Behind Harms, a dead Guardsman started to stir. sitting bolt upright, no less than two feet behind the medic. It threw itself at his leg, sinking its Teeth int the back of his knee. Harms hit the ground and the creature clambered on top of him and started biting the Medic's throat. Schneider was in complete shock. Gros, a regular Rifleman, butt swiped the creature before putting A Las-Round in the creatures head. "What the hell man! That thing just killed Harms" He yelled.
Schneider finally came round. "Everyone fall back, Fall back now" But it was too late, many of the Creatures were now sprinting at the men. From his position above, Flekk could see everything. The gap in between the fleeing Guardsmen and the unknown hostiles was decreasing rapidly, and before the four men had made it a quarter of the Way back, the were caught in the swarm. Searching desperately for his squad mates, Flekk looked down his scope intensely. A flash of silver Caught his eye. The Sergeant was fighting Valiantly with Gros bludgeoning the creatures with his rifle. The other two Snipers watched in Horror at the unfolding events.
Gros continued to strike the creatures. He was a large hairy man, commonly known as 'The Bear' because of his strength. He must have accounted for at least twenty confirmed kills before one of the creatures got behind him and bit deep into his shoulder. Within seconds, the enemy had swarmed allover him. Schneider could hear his screams but could do nothing to help Gros. Flekk cocked his Rifle, he couldn't just sit there and do nothing. He took aim on one of the creatures, just as it seized the Sergeant. All of a sudden the scope went black. He looked to see a Commissar and four Guardsmen stood next to him. "I wouldn't do that if I was you" said the Commissar, with his hand over the scope.
A large explosion went off in the location were Schneider was standing, a large red puddle for 25 meters around the area. The Sergeant being overwhelmed and injured did what his mentor would have done... Taken his own life for his Protege to live on. Lenderman stood and took off his helmet. Schneider had been like a father to Lenderman. Raus, another of the snipers and Wolk came and put there hands on the Corporals shoulders. "I'm sorry for your losses, but we have to move.... NOW"! Barked the Commissar. "I know a place to go...."
Hey Guys, hope you enjoyed this as much as I did writing it. Its amazing what putting on a couple of songs can do for you I'd love to know what you guys think of this. I know its a zombie story, but oh well, it happens now This is my first effort at something like this in a while, so let me know how best to improve. This will also be a base story for an Army I plan to start Collecting in Feb. A cookie to who ever guesses what they will look like Anyway, let me know if you all want more. I could get into writing this!
