I recently read a discussion on WargamerAU regarding the effectiveness of an Icarus Lascannon vs a Quad-Gun when buying fortifications. The quad gun is a solid choice due to weight of mid strength firepower (being two twin-linked autocannons). The argument for the lascannon is that if it hits it is more likely to get an explosion due to the higher strength and AP2. I was wondering about this so decided to crunch the numbers: This clearly indicates that when shooting at vehicles (considering you often only get one round of shooting against flyers) the Quad-Gun is a significantly better choice. It is more likely to knock off hull points, and it has a higher chance of causing explosions. The Las is 15 points less, and it isn't as though it is useless (and I personally think it looks better), however for those looking for the more effective competitive choice, the quad gun is the definite choice.

The Quad Gun is also much more reliable. The increased number of shots and twin-linking mean that even if the effect were a little less, you would be able to plan for it doing its thing, while the Icarus is very random.
Just for the first step illustration, a BS3 Icarus has a 50% chance of simply missing each Turn, while a BS3 Quad Gun only has about a 0.0015% chance of missing completely.

I think if you could twin link the Lascannon it would be more viable to take.
But the Quad Gun with BS4 is by far the better choice
Sit it behind the Aegis Defence Line and its got a 3+ Armour and 4+ Cover Saver

I think if you could twin link the Lascannon it would be more viable to take. That's what the "Bring It Down" order is for!

Icarus Lascannons have the Skyfire and Interceptor rule, don't they?

Icarus Lascannons have the Skyfire and Interceptor rule, don't they? yeah they do, but you can't use "Bring It Down" orders for the Icarus Lascannon, unless I've missed something Danger Rod

If the Icarus Lascannon is being manually fired by a member of a Unit that can receive Orders, he can benefit, since he uses it just as he would his normal Weapon.

Ah, I see, BUT you couldn't use the Lascannon's Interceptor rule along with "Bring it down" though as it would be out of sequence.....right?

It is probably better to pick your gun depending on if you want the aegis or the bastion. They are pretty similar, so it isn't worth it to buy both just to mix and match. Of course, it is pretty simple to convert one to the other with some spare heavy weapons.

Actually, if you don't glue the upper battlements onto the bastion, they make a superb proxy for the Aegis Defence Line and saves you a few £££.

The Defense Line is the better choice in general, tho. More flexible, can't be destroyed (usually taking a bunch of your dudes with it), cheaper (Points-wise), and the kit comes with the better Gun Emplacement.

Yeah, the bastion is a death trap for Guard or anything without a 3+ armour save
