Just wondering how people pronounced this, as I was thinking about Jeeves and Wooster earlier. I am of the opinion that it is pronounced valet.
...
As in pallet.
I don't think either is wrong, and I don't hold with any of that "I look down on you for your pronunciation" nonsense. Although if you put an i in the word ordnance, I will judge you.

Is it not French in origin? Never even heard people say it [rhymes with pallet] ironically, and I live in the US.
Edit: I find it hilarious that you used chalet as the other word.

When I see the word my first gut reaction is to say it in a way that rhymes with pallet.
But I have heard it said the other way by folks with more decent and refined sensibilities.

Valet as in val-ay as in "my car needs a valet" but val-et-id as in "im getting my car valeted"
