Ratlings: Best used in groups of 8 or more. The better ballistics skill makes the difference when hitting and they usually have a pretty good wound ratio. Picking targets also really help killing those important models like melta troops, sergeants, or power klaw orks.
Special weapon troopers: These arent worth the cost. Less snipers for more points and a lower ballistic skill.
Overall: Snipers are worth their cost, specifically ratlings. Handy in a pinch and add a nice touch to the game when you put a few wounds into your opponents most important leader.

agree with the above, but i'd add deploying them against the right enemy is important. Nids/orks i'd take something else.

I think a well placed squad of ratlings can be good against nids, just to hunt MC's and mess with synapse

Note that Ratlings are also the cheapest way to get a BS4 Operator on a Quad Gun/Icarus Lascannon, and with Stealth behind an Aegis Line, they're pretty tough for a Unit that small.

Ratings are awesome as previously mentioned, but if you mean equipping specialists, my pros and cons are as follows:
Pro's; They look damn cool They can work ok in a platoon command squad with a mortar team, I find the mortar and sniper combo firing at the right enemies causes a sort of psychological damage. Even if you aren't causing any real damage. They look damn cool. They are poor-average at sniping enemy challengers. Cons Ratlings do it better If you're after a list that will win Win WIN then the points can be better spent elsewhere It can be difficult to build a list where sniper specials are successfully integrated as a functional 'cog' They are poor to average at sniping enemy challengers
If you're a sentimental old fool such as me, they are worth it, if you're hardcore in for the win (nothing wrong with that mind), go for rattling a or just melta/Flamer/plasma elsewhere

I find Ratlings to be a good distraction unit, I had a whole 1500 pt Tau army fire -everything- at a 6 man squad for a turn and they didn't die, 2+ cover save while gone to ground is amazing

For some reason every time I use them, the enemy commits a lot of resources trying to take them out. For maybe 30-50 points the enemy basically gives me another two volley from my bigger units.

decoys and bluffs. both highly effective military tactics. and they can sometimes do damage themselves!

Hey. Just a question about the ratlings, having them behind an adl operating a quad gun, where is the quad los drew from? The guys i play with tells me i cant use em there because they dont have anny los over the wall and its the ratlings eyes i gotta draw from.

Don't let them screw you with that. Even with Ratlings draw LoS from the gun. If they complain about it tell them they can't shoot at your Ratlings behind the wall since you can't draw LoS to them because of their size. While model size is important, if your gonna get that picky with it then army's that are model crouching would be borderline broken.

Allright, thanks for the reply!! They argue with that los from the Gun isnt allowed and it have to be from the model, sadly theese guys are wery strict of following that rule in this case

ADL has slots that you can shoot through as well.

I'd argue true line of sight too... Short targets can find decent cover easier - but suffer from not being able to see over stuff.
This means you'll want to make some crates (matchboxes) to go behind your ADL.

any ideas how to take out a squad of 5 chaos space marine terminators that have deep strike and a mark of tzneech. I do have a baneblade (spearhead formation) but its too busy with his defiler, vindicator and 3 hellbrutes, another executioner or eradicator maybe or just another squad of ogryns in behind the lines just waiting for them to deep strike near my warlord?

The same way you deal with TH/SS Terminators: Lots and lots of lasguns. They have to fail their saves eventually...

As stated above, save your plasma guns for things that will definitely die to them. High rate of fire on the terminators will bring them down.

lots and lots of lasguns! cool means I got to do some painting lots and lots of painting, It had been suggested to take AC HWT, as well as AC on the chimeras, but the ML has got 3 shots, and the HB HWT has 3 shots (at str 5 though) compared to the 2 of an AC at str 7, might just do both HWT and see who has the highest kill count
cheers fellas

Auto cannons win most the time. They're the best at being versatile and useful in any situation.

I recently played my friends blood angels. Bring it down command ordered on my las cannons halted the terminators and Librarians land raider. Then first rank fire, second rank fire on two thirty man platoons ment 162 las gun shots even with his feel no pain they were no longer on the table and three kill points awarded one for landy one for thr terminators and killed warlord.
Avoid assault unless backing up a unit and concentrate on a strong fireing line. With heavy support protecting flanks with fast attack hellhounds etc supporting them
