morale-wise I swear playing guard is like getting pounded repeatedly in the face with a beatstick until you've spat all your teeth out on the ground, got dentures, had those beaten out of your face, rinsed & repeated the process a few times and finally decided that no teeth are just the way to go. maybe this is just me reeling from another utter beatdown due to my retarded 'all infantry' army training but for real, if I didn't just love my guardsmen with my heart I'd have let them go a long time ago. the things that keep me coming back for more with my gaurd, hmm, are: a) cadian models <3<3<3 b) the cadian colors <3<3<3 um.... sentinels are kinda neat (though I only have one built and painted for the table but hey ) oh yeah; burning whole squads of 4+ armored enemies in one shot with my hellhound *cackle* the first two are the big ones. if I can recommend to new guard players a couple things to think/ask yourself before you lay down some hard earned cash on models it'd be to assess the top two things I love about guard. do you like the models more than your other favorite looking army? do you have a paint scheme that would just be killer to see till the end of time? if you answered yes to the first question then be sure to pick the most awesome paintscheme you can think of because you'll be painting it LOTS hehe. hope a gem of wisdom or two can be sifted from this wandering blob of rambling thoughts

I Hear you My Friend .... Beatinmg After Beatings are all too Common ... However, I DO love My Guard ..
For These Reasons -
1) They were my 1st REAL army I collected and started up
2) Ordanence is our best Friend - Lot of Ordanence Barrages are just Pure Love
3) Hellhound .. Burn Baby Burn ....
4) Those WAY Too over confident New players who look at you as a easy Win, Only to see they're Best Squads and Characters get Blown away is Worth Any Beating

I'm hijacking my thread, no sense making more threads just to make random statements so hey, reduce reuse recycle right!? so I got 6 little circle things above my avatar now and my title is 'war lord' .. is there any way we can make that one word? two words seems kinda off - I liked warmaster better to be honest it was more 40k-ish .. warlord is kinda generic. ah well, here I am griping but by the time I get done I'll probably have 7 little bubbles above my avatar and be some other rank! I gotta paint more :s

I realized tonight as I made an armylist of all my iggies that I had over 100 guardsmen on the field. I realized that if I was a space marine player with that many marines everyone would ooo and ahhh about what an accomplishment it was to accrue a whole company of marines...but us guardsmen are just like 'meh, that's pretty good, you're getting there on troop numbers' ah the quiet glories of the guard

I play guard purely for the humour. You have a 300+ point, 8 man incubi retinue with tooled up dark eldar lord squad of death. Say hello to 10 point demo charge, then say goodbye.
When my JO ran through a devastator squad with only a power sword.
I suppose i also like the challenge. It makes winning more of an acheivement than if you did it with Iron Warriors etc...

I like how I can make an army play in 4 different detachments each supporting each other but if one section were to get hit the other 3 can support it and still not be crippled.. Fire support from 2 Baslisiks, static troops in the form of 4x5 stormies with GLs, and an anti tank unit, mobile units in the form of Vets, cmd squad, special weapons, sentinals all with deep strike, and then the armor column consisting of 3 hellhounds and a demolisher.. play each seperately with the rest to support them.. allows me to change on the go with regards to what i need and where.. also lets me surprise my opponents with mass template carnage..
I play for the diversity of the army.. and the fact that all my stats are horrible yet I can still win ( 12 - 2 - 2 WLD record ) .. this is why I play guard..

I took a beating off eldar last night. My opponent fielded 2 wraithlords in a 1500 point game. Those things are tough to crack. I managed to wound one but in truth my lascannon team sucked, couldn't hit anything on the rare occasion that it did i scored 3 hits and i only needed two 3+ to wound. I rolled a 1 and 2 2's. I was mightily cheesed off. The guy walked through my tanks without a problem. Back to the drawing board for me.

I chose Guard primarily for conversion opportunities, though it might have been influenced by the fact my dad jumped the gun and bought me a Russ. And 50 models in a 500 point game is lots of fun against Space Wolves.
But really, for me 40K games aren't about the winning. They're about the gloating. About making every player's jaw drop in unexpected...ness. Several examples: Boast: "My Daemon will tear your army apart!" Result: Sanctioned Psyker with Force Weapon in AF Squad Boast: "My Dark Eldar will kill your army in assault!" Result: Immobilized reaver, 40 rapid fire lasguns
Plus even if you do lose, you can make your Guard do some heroic stuff. It may be a close one, but you probably put them with a lot of hurt. And when all else fails, blame the dice.

that made me want to play 40k glad I have a gigantic battle this sunday!!! eldar can be tough - falcons with the full 'defensive package' can be so hard to down, and now wraithguard can't even be phased by lasguns due to their high toughness!!!

I just loved the Guard from the start, nothing drew me to them, they looked better than any of the other models, and taste good [ >_> ]
I joke of course, I nearly picked orcs, but I saw the Baneblade on Forgeworld and was like "If I get Imperial Guard, I can field one of THEM?"

I'm an old-school fart who played Space Marines in the day of Rogue Trader. I left 18 years ago, and said if I ever played again I was going to play Tallarn .. just liked the looks of them. I started back in about 5 months ago, and will be posting pics of the new army. I have about 2k points now ... and LOVE them!!! I get spanked pretty hard, but the joy of that rare AWESOME KILL outweighs the sadness of the butcher's bill. What I love most? 1) Always seem drawn to the hoarde armies ... 2) I love LOTS of infantry supported by a few tanks and LOADS of ordinance ... 3) The underdog feel of troops in no armor, armed with the crappiest weapons. You are sure to beat me, but if I miraculously WIN, that means YOU SUCK!!!! 4) I am the worlds worst die roller (ask Memnochdrago), so I needs HOARDS to make up for it. 40 chances to hit at a 6+ ... I can do that!

it really is something to hear your enemy put his hands to his face and scream theres just too many to kill.
of course were the underdogs but were the fricken heros.
i remember when a single hellhound friend an entire squad of genestealers protecting my autocannon squad, ratlings, and the entire left flank because of the crazy inferno cannon.
another time a squad of terminators deepstriked in my ranks. my HSO charged in power sword a swinging and killed four of the bastards with out taking a wound.
another time a blood angel terminator group deepstriked onto my left flank. i gave them a squad to fight for two turns while i amassed guardsmen with in twelve inches of him. i had fourty lasguns trained on them. it was ungodly i fired 20/40 rapid fire lasguns and fell them all. then i shot up the chaplain with the other 20/40 lasgun shots
another time a dark angle chaplain on bike with a squad with him charged a guard squad. killed all but two men. they held their ground rallied and stabbed the damn chaplain in both of his eye sockets killing him and staying in the game for the rest fighting off the damn ravenwing
another time my guard really needed to take out this damn falcon or else we would lose the apoc game. the lascannon lined uh sights fired and knocked the damn thing out of the sky killing eldrad and everyone on board.
and yet in another time a different dark angle player decided to deep strike onto a board that carried over 100 imperial guardsmen. not smart. he picked this one narrow space and prayed for ages not to scatter. he scatterd and that huge death wing squad scattered onto the guard and faced instant death.
alot of examples i know. but it goes to show when youlook for heros and examples of bravery dont look to the marines for they are made into heros of legend. look to the guard for only through battle and death do they become the true heros of the imperium. this men and women who fight the good fight for the imperium with lowly lasgun and flak jacket.

In our last game, 1 IG squad and a HQ took out 5 of a 7 terminator unit that TP'd behind my lines ... Artillery fire eliminated 4 vehicles and two squads .. IN ONE GAME ... A lone ratling held up a whole marine squad and a d-naught for three turns .. until they got sick of not being able to kill him and moved on ... four ogryns tied up two assassins, keeping them from wiping out my hq ...
I love the IG!!!

Like most people I started with the SM armies. I liked the fluff of the Crimson Fist. However, if you try to play a Marine army according to fluff you get spanked harder than a guardsman.
After watching several games being played by guardsmen I pulled out my wallet too. Most of the players were getting their backsides handed to them on platters. I wanted to prove that you could play guard and not only have fun with the army, but win most games.
It took Four years of amassing every female model that GW puts out and a year of conversion before I even placed the first model on the table (more conversion work is needed) or even bought my first vehicle. Now I have a total of 2500 points to field as a normal guard army, and just about 7K for the apocalypse battles. My ladies in pink roll over most opponents.
Taking out two units of Genestealers in a single turn and still able to fire half your army at the rest of the bugs is an amazing feat. I don't leave home with out the girls.

Well, for number 1, I ADORE the Cadian models. i wiish there were some girl troopers that you didn't have to special order, but yeah. I love them.
2. Paint scheme? I dunno. A deep brown for fatigues, with a wine-red armour for armour, black and grey cameo on the brown?
