As the title says, I've been looking at making some competitive lists and I just can't figure out which route to take. My other 6th edition army is Chaos and well rhinos are alright just to make sure the marines didn't take too much heat right off the bat but the whole hull point rule has me baffled. I'm not sure what is better right now, chimeras are great and vet's are great but at the same time the amount of fire power you can pump out from infantry squads with heavy weapons is something you can't deny and having a chimera get glanced to death doesn't sound very fun for my vets. I'm just wondering what you guys think would be the best approach from a competitive aspect. Your insight will help me decide which route to take. Thanks again guys.

Well, you can get a truly insane amount of firepower off of mechanized platoons; in a lot of ways, that's the best of both worlds in that you're getting both the numbers and the firepower you want.
The thing about Vets is that while they're good at what they do, they're not so good that you can build a list around only them with some support elements, unless you plan to go tank-crazy. Vets are good at killing things. So are Russes, Hellhounds, our artillery and our aircraft. However, they're not so great at holding objectives, as they die just as easily as regular guardsmen while being about twice the cost, after factoring in the points spent on equipment and the like. Vets need a target they can go after in support of the greater battle.
Ideally, you'd want to consider taking a balanced approach. Use a combination of mechanized troops and groundpounders. Your gropos give you a static firebase that's great for holding an objective or simply being a pain to move, while your mech troops advance to hold midfield objectives and take the fight to the enemy.
Of course, it's all ultimately up to you, but I'd take a look at the local metagame if I were you, and figure out what lists would work well in that environment, and just experiment.

I'm in agreements here, I like cheap platoon units as my access to chimera... chimera provide you with 2 heavy weapons for the price of a squad so I can keep my infantry squads cheap.
Add some mortars and basalisk to fire over the wall of chimera and maybe a russ or two for dedicated anti tank and leave the difficult job of advancing onto objectives to the enemy.
I only ever used my melta vets once during 5th ed and that was in an apocalypse game to grav chute them behind a stompa.. never had the need for my guard to get that close to the enemy til then (or since).
At heart my preference is infantry, Guard platoons can be fantastic and even if they aren't they look awesome.
They do take a whole lot longer to paint though!
