The rules for melta bombs are in the main rule book, in the CC sections. I think it is in the nades bit but might be in the vehicle in assault section.

Ok Meltabombs are grenades against tanks. They hit tanks in close combat like any other grenade. Their strenght is the same like a melta gun. And they roll the same dice for armour penetration like a Meltagun at short range.

Cant they just be called melta grenades? ? Maybe they're just to big to be called a grenade. Like a demolition charge.

If you ever see them modeled by like space marines or on the sprues they are big things with a handle, so they look more like a bomb than a grenade.Assaulting a tank is kind of tricky though in my opinion, i would rather shoot it from a distance but if you need to get close to one at least take a melta.Hope that helps.

Grenades are designed to be thrown. Melta Bombs are like a Limpet Mine, they're attached directly to the surface of the target, armed, and left to detonate on their own.

Cant they just be called melta grenades? ? Maybe they're just to big to be called a grenade. Like a demolition charge. A Melta bomb is a 2 small conjoined disks that are twiseted, there is a centeral switch which is pressed to activate it, and you are able to set the time for 5 - 15 seconds. They have a magnectic clasp on them to latch them into the tank or other tiem requiring Destruction, E.g Bulkhead

Meltabombs can be thrown more easily then demolition charges. The problem with melta bombs is that they're not blast weapons, they're weapons that only have a small and focused blast.
I'm not sure if everyone here knows how melta weapons work, so a short explenation. Melta weapons use super heated gases that well melt everything in their way. But unlike plasma techology it's not that instable but only works on short range. Azalar already said that they are made of two cylinders. In these two cylinders are the two gases that are required to cause the melta reaction. But as such a cylinder has only very few "fuel" you have to focus the "beam" into one direction so that the bomb has the most effect. So I hope everyone sees, that throwing a meltabomb would be gambling at it's finest as you'd never know to which side the beam will focus. But if it's attached directly to a tank the beam will force it's way through the tank and melt everything.
(Source is the main rulebook and some of the 40k novels I have read)

nice explanation....just got an image in my head of a nearly dead veteran sergeant priming the timer on his melta bomb as a chaos predator lumbered dangerously close over towards where he lay...and well i think u know the rest...but that is a sweet description knight...have u read the ultramarines omnibus...a squad of ultramarines had to blow up a bridge...and their techamrine used melta charges to blow up a really...really large bridge...by blowing out the metre thick supports under the bridges and stuff....graham mcniel (author) made some pretty fine descriptions on how they blew up...hehehe...melta bombs
