I have yet to play with allies. However, I am with Westrider. I think that Marines are the way to go, they can fill a lot of gaps we have at least on paper. I think Space Wolves or Blood Angels probably the best picks. I think BA would jive a little better. Be careful, Westrider and hendrick makes a very convincing Space Wolf argument. With the Dark Angels librarian being so cheap, I feel like there is pretty much never a reason to pick a Primaris Psyker now. He is better in every way and is 5 points cheaper plus you can upgrade to Mastery level two. And while you have to a take a troop, I bet a 5 man tactical squad can fit somewhere in your army. At the very least as at least a back field objective holder. They can still take a special weapon as well. Or maybe a scout squad for and outflank to steal an objective. That is a lot of versatility added for very few points.

DA Tacticals can actually take a Heavy at five-strong if they want. A 5 man Tac Squad with a Missile Launcher with Flakk is only 95 Points for an excellent backfield Objective Camper/versatile harassment Unit.
Another other big thing DAs bring are the Infravisors. 5 Points to add Night Vision to any IC and the Unit he Joins? Bargain.
On top of that, because their Techmarines are outside the FOC, you can bring one of them along pretty cheaply, along with a Librarian, giving one Blob Fearless, Divination powers, and Night Vision, and another Stubborn Ld8, Night Vision, and a decent Combat Character.
All that said, I think DA actually work even better as the Primary force with Guard Allies. Azrael can't take an Infravisor, but he can give a whole Blob a 4++, and in a Primary Detachment, he makes both RavenWing and DeathWing into Troops Choices, letting you take Bikes, Terminators, Tacticals, and Guardsmen all as Troops Units. You can fit in all kinds of toys and have a huge amount of it be Scoring.

wh40k.lexicanum.com/wiki/Red_Scorpions#.UT-FPRz_mSoThey seem like real jerks. According to the fluff, they consider all other military arms of the Imperium to be "untrustworthy." If I *had* to pick a Spess Muhreen chapter to ally with, I'd go with the Wolves. Mostly because they sound like they'd be fun to drink with. Also, I already have their codex. So there's that.

It has to be said space puppy's look fornicateing epic! How the fornicate dya paint a wolfs fur tho? Fur is easy. Basecoat, wash, drybrush. Sorted. I think it's actually easier than getting Power Armour to look good, truth be told. At least, I have some Chaos Marines I painted ~15 years ago with garbage paintjobs on their Armour, but the pelts they've got look good.

You could always do something crazy and pick Sisters of Battle. They are uncommon, so you won't see them everywhere you go, and you can run more anti-tank stuff than anyone ever.
Also Celestine with Seraphim are nice infantry hunters, five flamer shots, rerolling wound rolls, and an improved ability to hit and run thanks to Celestine's initiative.

I've done just that, actually. Just ran my first game last night of Guard/Sisters against a friend's DKoK. The Sisters weren't stellar, but then again, neither were my tactics. Like I said, first time playing either, and my deployment choices and tactical decisions weren't exactly top-notch. But it was fun, and I can see the two working together really well. Also, Celestine and Seraphim are a combination born of the deepest pits of Ward-hell and are only to be used by those without a soul. Not that I'm bitter.

I know a couple of people who run Sisters with Guard to great effect. Uriah Jacobus is also a pretty popular option in their lists.

The buff he gives to blobs is pretty sick Combine that with Straken and you suddenly have 3 attacks when charged plus feel no pain. Using the calculator, 30 Troops vs 30 Orks: With overwatch and those buffs numbers say the Orks would take 22 casualties, before they strike. You would almost certainly win combat.

I've gone with wolfs, purely for deep striking termies!!! I don't have my Dex on hand, but I'm fairly certain that, unlike regular Termies, Wolf Guard Termies can't Deep Strike without they use a Drop Pod.
