Converting Hero

I recently bought Hero and Brains off Ebay, and I do intend to use them for my Jangovingian CCXXVIIth. I'm in doubt, though. I could field them as if they were themselves, i.e. the same soldiers but returned to duty after a mission with Schaeffer granted them the Emperor's Pardon. But I could also convert them.

I was thinking of using Hero as a regular officer, but in keeping with my army, I'd have to convert him. Is it feasible to cut off his laspistol with a saw and replace it with a plasma pistol? Mind you, I'm no star with greenstuff and do not have anything to pin it in place with either.

As for Brains, I would probably just use him as is, maybe give him an antenna and use him as my main vox caster guy.

Replacing Hero's LP with a PP may be a little fiddly at points, but if you go slow, measure twice, and cut once, it should be doable. However, instead of trying to remove it all at once with a saw, I'd be more likely to try cutting it off in several smaller sections with clippers, and then file down what you can't clip off without damaging his arm and hand.
