It started like this...
I had the army I had chosen when expecting to face my friends Eldar, so Empty's Orks presented me with an interesting alternative.
I had 4 squads of 5 marines each with one lascannon, they set up covering the back edge of the table. I placed the 10 man squad with Emperors Champion and Melta weapons ce trally and flanked it with 2 squads of 10 assault marines with added reclusiarch chaplains and added power mauls (the models with thunder hammers)
I was facing this:
The top left looked the scariest, with shoota boys, a looted wagon full of Nobz and Warboss as well as a battlewagon full of burnas.. add the koptas with AP3 rokkitz and it could get messy...
but with a good shot or two from the lascannons and the Boss's wagon would be stuck behind a smoking battlewagon.
... I managed a single glancing with all 4 lascannons in turn 1.
This meant this happened in Empty's turn 1:
which rapidly became this:
and a load of this:
Thankfully I countered with a double amount of this in my turn 2:
They launched themselves whole-heartedly into combat which went like this:
and finally.. without the Orks even getting to strike back.. the Templars consolidated toward the bunker:
Which meant in Empty's turn 2 he could zoom his DakkaJet in and blast them to pieces...
Meanwhile.. on the other flank...
Empty's rokkit koptaz were engaged in a grinding battle where the lascannon was serving useful to its wielder - he was swinging it hard and successfully batting away the buzzing greenskins while watching his brethren fall around him (bolters don't give enough momentuum).
Note that the Melta's had got dangerously close to the battlewagon.. they had clearly been trained by the same ballistics expert as the lascannons.. so missed it. BS4.. bullsh...
so.. where was I.. ah yes; turn 3,
... the remnants of the Dakka'd unit immediatly reacted by jumping headlong into another combat with their twin squad and recclusiarch.. with similar results
as before, no Xenos was able to return injury as they were all slain to quickly:
oh.. and Empty scorched up a load of the Templars with melta wargear, but I have no pictures of the burny dance... boo
Tread turn 4..
During this fight the Emperors Champion had become restless and multicharged the warbuggies and the slugga boy squad, the EC slicing through one buggy effortlessly.
All this close combat action was occurring in front of Empty's general, who had a great view from within his immobilised looted wagon (it had got stuck on scenery during Empty's turn)
So the Warboss watched on as his green tide was wiped out...
and once again the Jump Packs took the Templars away to safety for another turn... (or so I thought)
oh.. and this grueling dueling slugfest was stiull on going....
Empty turn 4:
Empty shot at some marines on a hill with his DakkaJet while the marines tried to shine a big
flashlight lascannon at it.. and failed.
the Warboss got out his Wagon... finally
and... advancing the shoota boys, Empty's lads lined up their guns and sprayed bullets into the general vicinity of the Templars.. and were suprisingly effective too...
Tread turn 5 (maybe.. we lost count of turns quite early on)
Enough for the following Jump Assault to have lost its punch though....
As there were other players hovering round waiting for the table I had initiated the above suicide charge.. and felt it was best to continue and launcher the rest of the assault marines and Emperors Champion into the Nobz and Warboss hoping to take down Empty's HQ:
oh.. and this was still happening... bash, swipe, hack, hit and run, charge, overwatch fwazap, crash, bash, swipe etc
So the shoota boys won their fight and followed their bloodlust into the nearest scrap available.. mixing in with the Warboss:
the DakkaJet re-appeared and whittled down the Lascannon squads a bit more while the rest of the army fought for victory...
We left it at that... Warboss slain yet a whole Mob of Nobz and only the Emporers Champion remaining in the Templar fight.. (okay, so there were about 15 other marines holding a gunline but they'd done sweet FA all game)...
dramatic tension and narrative conclusion...
(well.. technically Empty won)
I think I would have been wise to have pushed the marines with Lascannons forwards and involved them in the close combat / short ranged firefighting, they would have handled the buggies quite easily and could have stripped wounds off the Nobz and the Burnaz.
.. once again, loads of fun, especially toward the end when a number of other players were voicing their opinions about the 'best' most 'competitive' tactics to use while me and Empty were fairly clear we'd just do what was fun and would be a laugh to see what happened..
then we packed our miniatures away in a catfood box and a biscuit tin and went for a pint...
