I loled, you get 1 point stabby
while 40k is modeled around modernesque army themes, the fluff of the game DOES set the scene in the 41st millennium as one where ancient history has been lost to the sands of time. basic history is written back to the period when the emporer was born, and before that, not much is remembered, even in a base way. If I'm not mistaken, mankind was almost regarded as being in its 'caveman' period before the emporer came and took us to the stars.
basing your army name off a 20th century piece of history, while attractive at first, is unfortunately not the fluffiest way to go (this is in no ways saying you can't do it - it's your army, you pay the dollars, euros, pounds, etc. for your minis and paints
).
I see nothing wrong with the 112th rifles as a basis for your armies name. you'll want a home planet. In my 2nd edition IG codex, there's a galactic map (I'm at my moms for the weekend unfortunately though). let me tell you a bit about the galaxy to help you pick the sector from which you come.
the segmentum solar (and by the way, if I butcher some names, just forgive me - I'm doing this from memory) is the core of imperium space. terra is at it's center. this is a pretty peaceful sector because alot of the wars are fought in the other sectors (the eastern fringe, segmentum pacifica, etc.) most often, when an IG regiment is raised in the segmentum solar, it's in response to an ongoing or massively escalating warfront (like the 13th black crusade - events that taxed the in-sector IG forces so much that reinforcements from beyond the sector were called for).
to the galactic south is Ryza, a forest world, but reknowned forgeworld, nearby is catachan - this sector dealt with a massive orc invasion in the recent past (ryza was the main target of the invasion).
to the galactic southeast is McCragge, home of the ultramarines. they live out on the edge of known space and have dealt with tyranids most notably. tyranid problems are alot more common in that area of space than elsewhere.
to the north, just outside the segmentum solar is the eye of terra, and the mighty and glorious, ever embattled Cadia (no bias there
) chaos is the primary threat in this area, but the eye of terror was formed when slaanesh was born from the eldars addiction to self satification and enjoyment of excess (they had ruled the galaxy at that point, and declined into decadence). when slaanesh was born, so too was the eye of terror. the eye of terror is a sector of space where the walls between the immaterium of the warp and realspace have been worn down to the point where daemons can cross into the physical world with little effort - this is why it's the home of chaos
there are several minor landmarks to the galactic north of the eye of terror, the one that comes to mind is the ruins of the caliban system - original home of the dark angels, it was somehow mysteriously blown apart, and it's said that the dark angels space marine chapter now has their fortress monastary on a chunk of what used to be caliban (though they've built engines into it, so the dark angels are a fleet based chapter).
that's all I can remember about the layout of the galaxy at current, when I get home, I'll grab the map and answer more questions about particular sections of space so to help you figure out what planet you want to be from. I'll also have all the major planets listed so I can tell you some planet names where you choose to settle. if you want an obscure planet that is cool too - sometimes obscure planets are the best since statistically you're WAAAAY more likely to hail from nowhere special than you are to hail from a famous world (though famous worlds have bigger hive populations and thus bigger marshalled regiment sizes - so in that effect you're more likely to come from a famous world where a regiment is 25,000 soldiers vs. a remote world where a regiment is 1,000 soldiers).
hope the ramblings have helped.
so right, pick a planet name, insert it into the equation.
define what company your army is in. A, B, C (alpha, bravo, charlie)? 1st, 2nd, 3rd? add that too.
how big is your army? just starting? make your army name include a platoon if you're at combat patrol size. you can trim that out later once your commander has been 'promoted from lieutenant to captain' and is now the company commanding officer (AKA your army is bigger cuz you've bought more stuff and painted it all up).
one thing to consider - is your armies unit conventional or a-typical? does your regiment even use companies and platoons?
feral armies would use tribes and warbands or something.
since this is russian, it sounds like it will use companies and platoons but you could always rename those two terms to add a russian feel.
hope it helps
