Can I use decal over satin varnish? Or does it have to be gloss varnish?
I have satin varnish and it would be good to use it rather than buy some gloss varnish.
Also what is a good matt varnish to use over the top of models and decals?
replies appreciated

The reason for putting decals over gloss varnish is to make a really flat surface to give better adhesion and less silvering. I would get a gloss varnish, personally, but you'll probably get away with satin. I use Humbrol acrylic varnishes, but I suspect they are much of a muchness. And I gloss varnish over decals before I matt varnish the model... not that I'm paranoid about losing those decals

an excellent point. I've decided i shouldn't skimp on the purchasing on materials for the my minis. so i'll get me some microset, sol, gloss varnish and spray matt varnish for an overall coat.

i use vallejo 'decal fix' (water based) to adhere the decal to the model and once the decal is dry, brush more decal fix over it . not only does this fully bond it to the model, but also drys absolutly matt and you cannot see the decals gloss'ness (not a word)
then i spray over with vallejo matt varnish , which after trying many different companies ... is by far the best.

Yeah, gloss varnish for better adhesion. Use decal setting and softening solutions (MicroSet and MicroSol for me in the past with good results) to get the decal to look "painted on." Then seal with whatever varnish you want.

This is probably why I never got decals to work for me. I guess I should have another go now i know how to do it properly....

An EXCELLENT base coat and seal for decals is Future acrylic floor polish. It is glass smooth, never yellows, and it is cheap to boot (one bottle will last you for YEARS). It is also great for working with clear parts by making them more optically clear making them appear thinner and filling the micro scratches often found in them.
