So this cropped up in another game I had against a space marine player.
Here's what happened;
My opponent had a squad of tactical marines out in the open. They were 10 strong and pretty much arrange in two lines of five. Now I shot the primaris psykers lighting arc, after passing my psychic test. He didn't deny the witch and I hit him 8 times. I wounded him 7. Now the 24" "bubble" around the pp extended to the squad but only to two of the space marines inside the squad. My opponent said I could only wound the marines I was in range of. I think he might correct here but I just thought I was hitting the squad? Could someone clear this up for me?
I get you not being able to shot at targets you can't see (if part of the squad are behind cover) but I thought if you were in range to hit the squad you could wound the squad but only if you could see them?
Thanks again for your help. -Cdr.Wattz-

This was a Rules Change (tho it's disguised as a clarification) made in the Main Rulebook FAQ. You can download it from GW's site.
Your opponent is correct, tho. Only Models which are in Range of at least one firing Model can have Wounds Allocated to them.

Yes but if the closest model in the squad the PP is attached to has range to the farthest back model of the target then all wounds are allocated as if in range of the farthest back shooting model.
So even though the PP may have only been in range of 2 marines if there were closer guardsmen in the squad the PP was attached to the all attacks would have gone through to the marines.

I don't understand why they didn't make the range rules more strict in this edition, since the dice pool system means you are rolling for each weapon type anyway it wouldn't be too much to factor in the different ranges.
