The meaning of life is 42... Moving on how does one construct defensive terrain (not hillsides I mean walls and fortifications) and how does one employ it in the game? Doesn't it give the IG player a big advantage Please reply, and good Raven hunting!

making terrain is a great side of the hobby to get into and is definately encouraged. there's alot you can do with $5 in materials and a styrafoam cutting device that costs about $20 from GW.
as far as terrain giving an advantage, yes it does, and that's why it's valuable to set up fair tables, so in the inevitability that you lose the choice of sides roll then you still have some terrain to work with.
terrain is especially important for regular guard as their armor is only 5+ leaving them suceptable to rifle fire. carapace armor negates this but without the heavier armor, you'll need to stay in cover and only dash between cover areas. cameleoline is a great option too once you get alot of cover made and are using heavily terrain ridden battlefields. it'll increase your cover save by +1 for a modest point cost (half of the carapace armor costs).

On the terrain front how does this sound: On one half of the field razorwire and lots of walls with slits for guns and cannons. On the other half it has hils at the back edges+ some shield/small semicircle bunkers w/firing slits.
Is that balanced?

I'd go with a bunch of craters for no-mans land too. there's some amazing trench system terrain on the forgeworld site (if you're willing to shell out that kinda money) that would really make this terrain concept pop.
for the basics though, doing a fortified vs fortified table setup definately sounds balanced and feasable.

Most of the time if you playing at home but at GW theyre tables are pretty much set up.

If you're playing at a non-GW hobby shop (like Hobby Town USA) then you and your opponent just take turns setting up terrain.
Building terrain is a LOT of fun. Evantually, you'll be building destroyed Titans and stuff, but that aside... The set up you described is a fun one, but you'll almost never play it. The table is usually no more than 25% terrain. You'll just have to place everything as best you can.
The terrain set up can win or lose games for the IG grunt. Play some small, quick games with terrain set up and use the trial and error method.

im informed by a geek friend of mine that there will be a new battle mat for apocolypse and thats a ll set um with a trench net work not to sure though?

Well I find that for more useable terrain that making to or three level buildings being mostly intact works very well as make shift fortification as will placing them at key areas like two on your side of a barge is defendant to be a more usable thorn in any opponents side. Well for ever stratagem there is a counter and there is no perfect plain or army list (don’t quote me on that) but when it comes to assaulting fortifications some armies are better suited for it like the bug one. And if and I do mean if you could spot a weak point in the defence line like most of the have weapons in the center force him to divide his fire and there is most always a blind spot in any killing field. As well the BS for a guardsman is 3, storm trooper is 4, most of the time the shoots will miss so there is an advantage but it still runs down to the player and I have given handy cap’s to player for example taking the first turn and counting my 6 sentinels as destroyed. It is not quite fair but I am trying to see if my army can still sludge it out even if my opponent gets lucky and knocks them all out in the first turn, and that is a possibility. And what did I do to be hunted ?

I think it would be cool to make a game board like a miniature version ofthe city of Ypres- Two trench systems, one surrounding the other but the other with a giant city behind it- combination siege-trench-cityfight. maybe even some add-on boards with small villages to go behind whoevers lines to run offensives against and suchlike. Cool huh?

The cover saves can be good just remember to account for Blocked Line of sight. Most shooty armies can get torn up pretty bad on their first battle in tall terrain(buildings, trees, ect). Just be careful of fast 'Nids and you'll be well served by you cover.
