I know some of you fine folks have had experience casting things in resin... I was wondering if anyone knew where I might go to buy the raw resin, and how it's done? Any help is appreciated. Thanks!

>a sound like a harp and a magic poof of smoke< I'm here. Buy two part polyurethene with a low viscosity off ebay. That's how I roll. Sorry I can't be more specific, I use UK suppliers, and I imagine for what it'd cost to ship to Seattle you could probably get another tub Any other questions, fire me a PM

Awesome, thanks, guys. I'll go check out the vids and get some resin to work with. I picked up some "Magic Mold" at the FLGS and thought I'd try it out.

Is 'Magic Mold' the same as 'Insta Mold'? If it is then I wouldn't recommend using resin with it, if I'm right resin creates an exothermic reaction when curing. This will cause damage to the mold.

Yeah, it's pretty much the same as Insta Mold. It says to not use anything that generates heat, so you may be right. Boo. Hm. Well, either I need a better mold making compound, or I'll have to try and make do with this stuff; it recommends hobby putty or epoxy. So maybe something like Apoxie Sculpt would work...

Use greenstuff with that or buy rubber if you want to use resin.

I have done a bit of moulding. Have a look on my blog - thewulfweb.blogspot.co.uk/search/label/mouldmakingA couple of tips. Whichever resin you go for, get a 1:1 ratio mix. My last lot was a 10:1 ratio and that made small casting runs very difficult to get right. And you don't need to make the moulds too robust; the casting cavities will wear out before the mould itself breaks up. Sent from my GT-N8000 using proboards

Use silicone rubber moulds

This. Well, the mold will just go squishy and crappy Use green stuff/epoxy putty in instamold situations, and as Foster et al have so rightly pointed out, get busy with some silicone rubber if you really really want to use resin. This can be a bit pricier, although the results are better. In my opinion, money well spent, as it's very quick and easy to knock out more of X when you need it, to a high standard.

Ok, I work with this stuff for a living, so check these guys out... www.alumilite.com/We use the RC3 primarily for our resin masters as it works well in the vulcanization process for the pewter casting molds, though for general purpose the 'regular' works great, otherwise if you have EXTREMELY detailed pieces, the Alumilite white has the lowest viscosity (less than water) and excellent mechanical properties.

Some good numbers in there Any idea how much shipping to the UK would be?

No idea, I would suggest contacting them. I am unsure what all qualifies as hazardous materials for international shipping which may be a determining factor for shipping international.

Awesome thread, thanks to the OP and everyone who has contributed. Have been looking at Alumilite's site, and their stuff sounds like just what I need since my attempts to do what I'm trying to do with Instant Mold and GS have failed. Did some digging and found that one of the few local hobby shops still left in the area do carry Alumilite products, so I shall be making a trip.
As far as international shipping, the Alumilite site claims that their resins are non-toxic, so there may not be an issue with ordering them. I anyone would like, I could ping on them about international shipping and post their reply here. Please PM me if you'd like me to give them a ring.

One other note, if your local hobby shops do not have it, the national Hobby Lobby chain carries the starter kits that include the RTV and something like a quart of each part.

Hi everyone. I just put in a call to Alumilite on behalf of those of you who contated me asking to do so. I spoke with Carol about shipping charges to the UK--from our conversation it sounded like hazmat won't apply, but specific postage will vary based on how much stuff you order, since it's calculated by weight, and she did mention that their calculation of shipping charges does not take into account any import duties or taxes that you may have to pay on your end. Carol asked me to pass along her e-mail, and encourages everyone to look at Alumilite's website for specific products you want to order, and then to contact her so she can give you a quote on international shipping. Carol's e-mail is: carol@alumilite.com

Oh, obvious exception to the hazmat statement is that if you order spray cans of stuff from them (like mold release) it won't be able to go on a plane, so keep that in mind. I just ordered the super kit and a spray can of mold release. The kit comes with a brush-on mold release, but it needs multiple coats, and you have to wait for the previous coat to completely dry before starting another, and I don't want to be arsed faffing about with that.

My Alumilite kit arrived today. I've still go some other things to acquire before I can start using it, though. Hoping to take care of that tomorrow...

Update:
I have yet to produce any molds. My local search for an X-acto routing type blade to cut alignment channels in the molds over the past week has yielded no results, so I just wound up ordering a knife set from Alumilite, along with extra measuring cups, silicone oil (so I can recondition my molds after casting the resin and extend their life), and a cheap digital scale so I can measure out proppa proportions of the silicone and its catalyst. One I get all of that I should be ready to dive into my first attempts.
