It is lovely to see a Steel Legion army! I have 9 squads and 24 missile launcher teams languishing in a box...

Love the tanks! Did you airbrush those?

Happy owner of those old models !! And of a very nice army with a strong theme ! The old stormtroopers are among my favorite minis.
I would like also to know if you airbrushed your vehicules.
Don't stop riding accross the ash wastes and protecting your hive cities, fiery protector of the Imperium.

Those tanks are great. Really love them. Some mould lines here and there but painting is so good that I can pretend I didn't see it. ;p

A great army My only issue would be the 'attack of the clone' poses for the pictures. I understand that they're single pose metals, although I hope they get mixed up a bit for variety when you play!

Thanks for the comments everyone. There are a few mould lines for sure. These were my first vehicles ever so I really was not the best at this. All the weapons are swappable on most of the tanks (I can never decide on what to field). The regiment is at 284 troops at the moment.
As to how they were painted, yes they were airbrushed, with an Iwata CS. Shadow grey over a white undercoat, followed by bleached bone and rust colors for effect. I then applied decals. After that I used Vallejo pigments to weather both the paint and decals, followed by a light drybrush of light grey for highlights. The rivets were done with Delvan mud, pulling the mud down to create a streak effect.
I am going to use Tamyia paints in the future (Field Grey and JA Grey) as a replacement for the GW paints. They are basically identical colors and airbrush much easier.
Hopefully I will add a Forge World Bombard or two by July.
I could use some guidance for painting Vendettas. I want to add two but I dont know what colors to paint them.
Storm Troopers were done in a style similar to the one from the last Imperial Guard book. Vomit brown and black grey armor, washed with Sepia. They look similar to Marvel Comics AIM soliders.
Converting Steel Legion troops is not that hard as I have come to learn. The best models are the Sergeant, the rifleman pulling something out of his belt and the missile launcher guy. The Sergeant can be equiped with power fists/flamers/meltas/standards. The Rifleman can have the Cadian arm throwing a grenade. The missile launcher can have binoculars in the left hand and a plasma gun, lasgun or mortar bomb in the other. I will have to post some pics of those conversions some time along with my Penal Legion and Psyker Battle Squad.
Sadly this regiment rarely sees action. If they do it is againt Blood Angels or Tau.

Superb tanks and a great way to show your face on the forum For the vendettas I'd stick with the same colours but only use the beige/brown for some solid stripes on the nose or something?

These were... your first vehicles?! I couldn't tell, they look really good! I wish I had such skills when I started... As for the Vendetta, I would use the same colours as your tanks, but add some grayish blue on bottom (something like this: precise3dmodeling.com/models/images/mi-24/mi24_large.jpg). Hope this help.

Thanks. Yes, they were the first vehicles I ever airbrushed, about 18 months ago. My wife got me an Iwata for Christmas and I played with it first to get the hang of it. The hardest thing was to get the paint to thin enough to go through the airbursh, but not too thin that it comes out like water. GW paints are horrible for airbrushing. I painted 7 tanks, 8 chimeras, 1 hellhound, 3 sentinels, manticore and 2 medusas and was cursing each minute of it. Bleached bone is particularly horrible. However, after all this pain I rediscovered Tamyia paints. They go through airburshes almost without thinning. You can thin them with 99% alcohol if you need to. The Tamyia range is much more suited to painting vehicles then the crappy GW line. Pigments were a paint to use. It took a lot of courage to dirty up my models. I was really on the fence with that. I had initially weathered them via airbrushing, but I was unsatisfied with the result. The second biggest pain with these models were the russes were the old style, with only HB sponsons. I had to cut them apart, put in magnets and also put in magnets in the turret to allow for weapon swaps.
The Hind gunship scheme is what I was looking for. Perhaps a Vendetta with a top coating of Tamyia Field Blue (basically Shadow grey), with an undercoat of a light sea grey or something.
Thanks for the idea!

My first airbrushed vehicle was waaay worse, happily I don't have any pictures of it. ;p I'm still not good at airbrushing but practice make us better, right? As for the paints I'm using Vallejo mostly but have also few Tamiya paints in my collection. I thinned it down with Vallejo Paint Thinner (with good result) but heard that Mr. Hobby Acrylic Thinner (I think it's the correct name of it) is a lot better for that.
And I'm glad that my idea with Mi-24 was helpfull.

Really nice looking stuff! It's great to see the older marks of the Leman Russ kit (you appear to have some that were the initial release type: Demolisher with the rounded commander's hatch with the shroud behind it in the first photo, and the lead Russ in the second photo) getting love next to the newest versions. Airbrushing GW paints can be a pain. With the older ones that came in the hexagonal pots with the flip style lids, I found that diluting up to 70% with water would get most of them to work. I have no clue how the newest formulation of paints will work though. But still, excellent job!
