Are you able to use melta guns for any target, not just for vehicles?

It is only melta bombs that have to be used on vehicles. Melta guns fire like any other gun .

Since meltas are AP 1, does this mean that my target does not get a regular armour save if I successfully hit the target?

also, since it's AP1, when you get a glancing hit it's upgraded to a penetrating hit!

Great all round weapons. Only problem is short range and only 50/50 hit ratio.

there is nothing like dropping a special weapons squad with cookers and a demo charge next to termies, you can see it in the eyes of your oponent praying to his respective god that you fail and the throw is off.

sssssss.......thats the sizzlinbg sound of melted adamantium armour on that well placed demo charge hengheist, melta guns are useful for infantry too, especially against special space marine characters who have a tendencey to rip a squad to shreds in one combat phase, (refers closely to chaplains, esp blood angels)

Just be careful where you deploy the Melta squad. People hate 'em so they are gonna draw massed fire. I suggest deepstrike them or put them in an Armored Fist unit.

What do you all think of deep striking melta veterans units?

Deep Striking Vets with meltas are probably the IG's best answer to serious armour threats or tooled up commanders and their retinues, however although they are deffinately cheaper and more effective than Storm Troopers Deep Striking Vets is a suicidal tactic and it is only worth the points if you need to crack a Land Raider for example.

Or create a diversion. I love watching SM or CSM players chase some Deep-Strike Vets with Meltas around the map. Give my other guns a chance to open fire.
Sometimes a high-cost gun can be used to your opponent's detriment without even having to fire it. Just use their proclivity to shoot at the thing with the highest point value on the board. Sure, they might kill that one lascannon, but they might also have put them in the line of, say, 50 rapid-fire lasgun shots.

heh, melta's a nice! like he said, only problem is short range, it would be fun if multi melta's were either Rapid Fire or Assault 1, or range 48', THAT would be unfiar though still funny

The extra BS of vets means that meltas are a better upgrade for them, than, say, stormtroopers, although they are better used as a sort of 'heavy line squad' rather than a headhunting unit like stormtroopers.
