The codex and the two small guys. Why buy all those Guard and realize that you don't like painting them or you don't like their stats?

Yeah, that would make sense... But then again, if your anxious to start on your guard and know your gonna stick with em no matter what, then go for it. It depends. Ya know... I would go for the codex and a few commissars me self...you gotta grab some commissars.

I would take the small one. Then you have all the rules you need and there are also some painting tips in the codex too. When you have two small guys as leaders, you can easily build an army you want, just buy guardsmen and some more guardsmen and more and more and more... But of course if you think your REALLY gonna play with IG then go for the big one.

Thanks for the tips guys! I did however forget to leave out something. I do not have the 40K rulebook. I also do know I will stick with the imperial guard forever though. Thanks.

Go in to a GW and play some small games there using their minis, this can be a very expensive and addictive hobby, so really be sure of the army u want before spending all ur cash and starting to paint, then u'll make the most of it. Read up on all the different races, and see if u can find any battle reports in WD magazines, or online. GW staff will happily talk u thru all the different races and u can find one that really suits how u want to play (hopefully it'll be the guard If u are just starting off, I'd get the codex and a few guys u really like, or have to have. then read the codex, and make up a few amry lits of things u want, then go buy them. Don't bother with the rule book for now. You will want ur own copy and u will need to know the rules, but if u can start off by playing in the shop, or joining a club, then u can focus all ur spending power on collecting an awesome force, rather than spending the cash on a massive rule book. The rule book is important, but IMO get in to the game first.

Actually, after a second thought.
Read up, talk with GW staff, choose ur army, then buy the codex and some basic troops, add the special characters later. Unless u choose a very specific army, then u will need the basic troop choices at least.

Thank ye! I have another update though. A friend let me borrow the codex for two weeks (enough for me to get the money for a codex) That means I could get some troops and have the codex except the codex is REALLY torn and tattered ( I dont know what the heck my friend was doing with it.) Thanks again!
