Local Painting Comp: Help!

So, with the release of the new Space Marine stuff & my local GW staff change, the store have decided to run a September painting competition that will ultimately decide the paint scheme for the new store space marine army; which I'm sure most know is what is displayed in cabinets, and on the game boards in store to use when new people want to learn the game.

The Winner will obviously see their chosen scheme in store, and I believe the entered model will also get a spot in the display cabinet for the store, too. The rules were that you had to paint one of three categories: Vehicle, Squad, Character and enter it in by Sept 28th.

Now, because I'm a guardsman at heart I didn't want to be painting something that would take all month for me to finish well, like a land raider or a converted tactical squad of 10 - as fun as they would be. So I chose to enter in with a character, as the Captain models released somewhat recently are quite nice.



I plan to enter on a detachable Character on a 60mm display base. That way, if it goes in the display case it looks a little more interesting (plus if I don't win and I have to keep it, it looks a little more interesting), but can be removed to just 28mm if the store say the character has to be on a game legal base

What do you guys think? Any help/tips would be appreciated.

If I can make any suggestion i would say to increase the glow of the plasma with some more white / orange as glowy plasma seems very popular at the moment - I can detect some red glow on the torso and straps already which looks good, maybe a little more will help differentiate the red glow from the red used on the wax seals.

I'd also consider putting some white into some silver and get a really bright drybrush onto the sword, radar dish and other silver details to lift those areas too.

Yeah I think you're right. I will need to get some lighter reds/oranges to add to it.

I have since painted over the golden eagle on the plasma gun as it was clashing too much.

I have since decided (as I have almost finished him already and I have till the end of September) to paint up 4 other troopers to make a Devastator Squad out of it, as I hope this will better showcase the colour scheme. The character model was fun to paint but his older Mk armour with the studs + many details detracts from the look of the scheme, I think.

I'd say another round of washes and edge highlights, as the drybrushing is still very prominent and the edges of the armour get a bit lost. Otherwise it's looking pretty damn cool. I really dig the head swap

Will try and get some more time highlighting closer to the closing date as I have now pretty much moved on to the squad. I must say, I am having rather a lot of fun with my new home brew chapter. When the new codex comes out there might be a new small space marine force in the works...

The display base is now on hold too on account of squad entry rules for the comp as opposed to character ones.

Hope to have something new to show by the end of the week.

Hey guys. I havent had the chance to get some orangey tones yet for the plasma but I did get some highlight blues so here is how that has affected the model:



As suggested I tried the make the highlight strong enough to soften the drybrushing. It was done using a very strong pigment light turquoise and the 'Eavy Metal dry paint for the light turquoise. Due to this older Mk armour not having as many main paint colour edges as the more modern stuff, here is my first devastator, also:

Thanks Effect! Hope you wont change your mind after seeing them all in full - finished just in time for the weekend of the competition:



I changed the Chapter badge to the generic skull as the Chapter name has changed to the 'Momento Mortis' chapter. A gothic style take on the (latin?) saying for "remember the dead" or, more appropriately for an Iron Hands successor "remember mortality" (and then become a robot).

I havent included squad markings because when I get them back they are likely to be split across multiple tactical squads. Melta and Las in the same Devastator squad? I don't think so, haha.







This guy will end up being a veteran Sgt of another squad, now.
