Probably Dark Angels. The Marines have lots of things sync well with guard.
Librarian can have access to divination, which has the 3 powers that are OP for guard. (overwatch at full BS, reroll to hit, +4 invul save). He is also fearless and a few points more than a commissar (also making him not necessary) its a steal. Attach him to your blob and it becomes an auto powerhouse. Make him mastery 2 and have him reroll scatter on your tanks and artillery.
Then add in things like tactical squads, bikes, and terminators and you suddenly fill all the niches that the guard lacks. (durable scoring units or tarpits/deathstars)
Space Wolves are awesome too, the only suffer from being more expensive verse DA.

I prefer Space Wolves. They're more expensive, but they fill in the counter-assault gaps better, they can do better in Midfield or at aggressive Objective Claiming, they can bring 2 HQs in one slot (yes, even as Allies, confirmed in the FAQ), and they're one of the last Armies in the game with real Psychic Defense. I feel like SW/IG is a contender for best Ally combo in the Game right now for an all-rounder List. Divination also has a fourth power that I feel is incredibly good with Guard, that supplies Ignores Cover. What's that Plague Bearers hiding behind a Defense Line? Sorry ;D
Orks are an interesting option that also allows for a solid mid-field/aggressive element, while really pushing the Horde aspect of the Army. The main attraction here is the potential to put together some Builds that really strain most Armies' ability to clear out Models fast enough. Can cause problems in Tournaments due to time limits, tho.
Dark Angels are good if you want MEq support, but more of a focus on firepower than with SW, rather than an All-rounder list. The shenanigans they can pull with a PowerField Generator and/or Azrael's Lion Helm are worth considering, too. Probably best as DA with IG Allies, while the others can work well either way.
***Past this point, I'm basically just giving a rundown on all the options. Those three, I think, are head and shoulders above the other possibilities.
Blood Angels and Basic Space Marines pretty much work out like SW and DA respectively, except that they don't mesh quite as well, for various reasons. BA can't contribute to shooting as well as SW, and SM can't bring Divination except with Tigurius, who loses some of his value as an Ally.
Eldar and Tau can bring some interesting variations on the Firepower game, but since they aren't Bros with Guard, you can't get most of the buffs you'd really want. Similar story with GK, tho they at least bring a stronger Midfield/Counter-assault element than either of those Xenos options.
CSM are probably the next most interesting after Orks of the Allies of Convenience. The option for a Helldrake is basically the selling point here. Again, works better as CSM with IG Allies, since a number of the CSM abilities only work if they're the Primary Detachment.
Chaos Daemons, I haven't really thought about. Off the top of my head, tho, I don't really see anything that would make them particularly amazing.
Necrons are about the only Desperate Ally I can imagine using. Mostly because you can load the entire Necron contingent up in Scythes, and use them to wreck stuff on the other side of the Table without worrying about the One Eye Open Rule. They can't Hold those Objectives, but they might be able to blow away dudes that your Guard can't get to.

i field an armoured company (FW) with an allied imperial guard detachment. this allows me to field more single tanks than I could do in the imperial guard codex, not to mention some of them can be BS4 etc

best ally for guard is more guard! every time I think of using another force all I think is "God damn, these are points I could be spending on more guard!!!"
ally your Cadians with Vahallans, I hear Steel Legion and Chem Dogs do well together too.

So what units work best going down the Ork ally pathway?
Do you fork out extra to really capitalise on the close combat shortfalls that IG most definitely suffer from or is it better to just field mobs?

I would go with the basic Ork Standbys of Shootaz and Lootaz. Either a Big Mek with Kustom Force Field or a Warboss, 60 Shoota Boyz, and 10-15 Lootaz. Focus your Guard portion more heavily on Anti-Tank and long range, and let the Orks push forward and take care of Infantry.
Definitely going to want to be running shooty Blob Guard in that case. The goal is to maximize the number of Models you're putting down, just flood the table.
