I've only been in 2 matches thus far; an even 1-1 record. I was planning on putting some HW teams together with some spare bitz I have. I was thinking about using some of my valuable bitz to put together some mortar teams. Is this a wise decision, or will I regret it later?

Put down some 40mm bases in a squad as proxy mortars. If you find they work in at least two games, then go for it.
Generally, mortars are best left at home unless you're planning on packing at least 9 of them. Otherwise, it's just not worth it.

I say its a matter of what armies you usually play against. Mortars are not very good against heavily armored targets (space marines, necrons etc...)
But are good against target with low armor and toughness (Orks, Tyranids, Tau...)

Sorry, cant post stats but i've had pretty good success with mortars although they are fairly expensive compared to putting them in infantry squads. As Minus pointed out they do excel at taking out light infantry.

I really like mortars but they work best (like all guard things) on mass. 2 squads can work really well.
Think indirect frag missles, with no minimum range.
I reallylike them but they don't come out for every game, so if u are short on cash, minis, etc... then missle launchers or autocannons will prob fit ur needs better.

Mortars are always worth it, even against heavily armoured enemies. Always remember that you can shoot without LoS. Normally 2 mortar squads (6 mortars) are more than enough, if you have enough minis and points (ok mortars are dirt cheap) you can go for more...

i have a mere 4 mortars spread out between a HW squad of 3 and an infantry squad with 1, and they seem to do the trick, as long as you guess similar distances and keep them all together.
They are my favorite heavy wep theme wise too, and firing without LoS is handy, but the scatter can suck sometimes.

then good for shelling masses of men or a loose squad spread out.
they excell agaist nids, orks, guard and are good against eldar pathfinder, snipers and anything that will spread out to keep you from hitting as much as possible. simple because they land in a reasonble terrain and well you know the rest of the story

I think the mortars are worth it! What I generally do is put them into the junior HQ's, the set my army in a boarder (starting side), and fire away at thier army ;D I avoid making a squad if possible, and put them int units you use as back-up. I managed to destroy a chaos squad in the first turn of firing! I'll admit, not much use agienst the tanks, but the mortars can shell-shock the tank, and then you can send in melta guns ;D, obiously not a good as a baslisk, but they can help your troops, espesially in the weaken-the-enemy-before-they-can-get-into-melle roles (saved my squads more than once) justt think of it like this: you attack with mortars, you use flamers, you charge with laspistols close combat wepons, you win that round (exept if you dare go ageinst genestealers )

Mortars are great if you play with folks that like using lots of terrain or fighting in cities, if thats not the case use Missle Launchers, or AC's. One thing I have seen is that mortars are great for harassing Tau Crissis and stealth suits that take advantage of their move-shoot-move rules. Even when they are back hidding behind their nice LoS blocking building you can put fire on them, and you might get lucky and pin them to(i think mortars are pinning)!
