Hey all, just throwing something I have been thinking about for a while as the rear loading decks are sadly bare on my artillery up to now. For lighter artillery such as the griffin heavy mortar I can certainly see using one of the old artillery loader figures (that USED to be included...) and spotters, however for larger siege guns those shells are quite large, larger than even a few guardsmen could lift let alone repeatedly or for extended periods. Thus a thought was born... Servitors are common throughout the imperium and are modified to work whatever purpose is needed to be filled. With this in mind, why not model a servitor or two for the back breaking, mind numbing, and dangerous job of artillery loading?
Any thoughts or input towards this idea?

I approve this message since i really need some loaders for my artillery! however, going by the prices of GW's servitors, how would you handle it? perhaps catachans+plasticard bionics could work?

perhaps catachans+plasticard bionics could work? That's how I would do it.

That may work, however I want more detail than even the GW servitors have, so I was actually contemplating sculpting and casting them myself.

If you have the spare legs and torsos (either from unused tank and flyer crew or bitz stores) you could use Anvil Regiments Bionics. You can use the left rifle arm to hold the ammo up, with a multi-part arm to show the pushing/steadying motion of holding it up. get what I mean? If you're wanting a more barogue/less-humanoid servo-arm, you can always hit up Zinge for some Robotic arms.

After reading this post I couldn't help but to contribute with my own WIPs. I can see what you mean about your dilemma with regards to the models being to small for such a physically demanding role and knowing the IG it makes sense that they would sentence some servitor to this menial role, after all, it suits them to a T! As previously mentioned I agree with the use of Catachan arms as I personally believe them to be too big (almost cartoon-like) for normal models anyway so they should meet your purpose.

The story behind it all was that due to their expertise in siege warfare, a DKoK detachment was provided to my army in order to facilitate the levelling of a rebellious city's defences prior to the ensuring urban conflict. However, the IG in all of it's administrative blunders and ridiculous red tape insisted that a commander from my home world be provided to oversee the DKoK detachment and ensure they do their job properly... Even if the commander has no experience in artillery and is a drunken moron Attachments:

my main problem with the krieg artillery crew are their prices, and that they won't fit in that nicely with my cadian 812th, which i prefer to keep "pure", which is why i like commissarbob his servitor idea so much! servitors are rather "universal"

You could convert some fantasy ogres to be heavy loader servitors.

for open topped vehicles such as the basilisk those could work, however, for artillery emplacements they will cause you some problems statswise/modelwise people spotting your crew too easy etc. atleast that were my conclusions when i though about them. Please make some modular servitors commissarbob! my artillery is begging for it!

Well, the modular servitor (aka Labotomite) is making some really good progress. The sculpting on the body and legs is nearing completion, now I just have to do a bit of clean up and prep for molding and to make the arms. I intend to do the loader arms with an artillery shell as well as some utility arms such as mechendrites and other tools. I am considering also doing the heavy bolter, multi-melta, and plasma cannon options, however these may wait (though the multi-melta would be the first to be done). I will post pictures once I get a bit further along.

Soon, once it has primer on it, otherwise it will look like a jumble of various materials and be hard to pick out the details.
