hey, I'm an old player getting back into the game. I collected a small imperial guard force back in 4th edition (I think..) I'm looking to arrange my old models into a friendly yet competitive/playable list so that I can soak up the nostalgia and get back into the game after all these years. I would like to get my paws on some of the new additions too so I'm definitely thinking about how to integrate the cool new stuff with what I already have. When I was collecting, 'City Fight' Was the big thing and it captured my imagination. I would like to continue this theme with the army.. even if its just 'the look' x2 Steel Legion infantry squad with MLx2 Plasma Gun x1 Grenade Launcher x1 L/T x2 MLx1 Grenade launcher x2 and some spare lasgunners (all in all 30 Steel legion Infantry) Commissar Aprox 20/30 Plastic Cadians and Jungle Fighters (remember when they came in 20's....... :/ ) Flamers and grenade launchers Converted Jungle Fighter Demo Charge! Jungle Snipers x2 oahh and Converted steel Legion Snipers x2 (took the muzzle and stock off a croot rifle (minus spiky bits) and the extra plastic space marine scope off a bolt gun..) They look decent! CHIMERA Leman Russ Main Battle Tank /w Hull Lascannon (no sponsons) Steel Legion Sentinal (armoured crew compartment and Lascannon) So right off the bat I'll let you know what I'm thinking.. basically vet squads with Sniper Rifles and ML (could pick up a couple of vostroyan snipers to make it up to 6) I think this is the quickest way to get my stuff on the table. I'm worried that a gun line will be to boring to play though.. So I really like the idea of an assault force!! Melta vets in Chimeras! Hell Hounds.. Leman Russ Demolisher etc.. I am worried that an All vets list will not have enough men! I really like the idea of an Infantry Platoon squads equipped only with flamers

oops..?? acidental post!
equipped only with flamers.. Advancing up with the slower Leman Russes. I also like the Idea of points being spent on Special weapon squads instead of heavy weapons for the platoon squads. Special weapon squads with more than one Demo Charge!! Is this viable on the table? Can you fire more than one Demo Charge from the same squad in the same turn?
I also like the idea of 'Mad Max' Vets Dropping out of a Valk/Vendetta Armed with x2 Melta H.Flamer and a Demo Charge.. They could attack/harass most kinds of unit Tank with melta/TeQ with the demo charge and mop up with the Heavy Flamer.. For 140 Points will they do THAT much better than a basic 100 point triple Melta armed vet squad?
I cant get the 75 points that a Griffon costs out of my head!! THe points are conservative but are they worth the Heavy support slot?
How much of a threat are fliers? Are Hydras worth it these days seeing as I hear they can only really shoot airborne units..?
Thanks for your time reading all this. Cant wait to get back into it!! Very exciting times!!
oah one more thing? How far off is the new army book? Would hate to get caught out when they mix up the balance a bit.. Some advice on 'future proof' buys are redly welcomed!

Oah and one more thing.. to help me balance my lists..
How many points does the average Space Marine Tactical Squad cost? Would be a nice baseline to get a bearing on my thriftiness with points!

unfortunatly snipers aren't that great, unless when talking about ratlings. for 75pts you could get an earthshaker heavy artillery carriage, which i prefer in general over a griffon. hydras aren't the autoinclude they were, and even as AA units they are mediocre due to lack of interceptor. a lot of this depends on your gaming environment. what armies are you facing? what point values? what types of lists? if you're mostly facing space marines in armoured vehicles your list will be very different from when you're mostly facing hordes of orks...

Interesting about the Earth shaker carriage. The 36" minimum range seems to be a massive hinderance though, do you play on very large boards?
To be honest I'm looking for an 'take all comers' list for now. Something well balanced so I can learn the new rules and get back into it, I'm looking to make 750 points initially asap by buying the right Special/Heavy weapons to round off my existing models. But I would quickly want to be playing at 1000 points, with a view to expand the army out to 1500 with an end goal somewhere around 2000/2250.
What are your thoughts on infantry? Vets or Platoons?
As you may have noticed from the other thread I like the idea of my LRBT tank being a commissar tank. The LD10 seems to be an excellent way to use my existing model to boost my existing infantry. Costing more points than using the Russ as a heavy support option, but this is a good thing for me at this point, so long as the points are used well. What are the rules using armoured battalion commissar tanks as allies to buff your infantry? Is it possible? Fluff wise I LOVE it, so I have no problem in fielding it and feeling too beardy.
Fluff wise too Im beginning to really like the Concept of using fire heavily in my army. Flamers, Meltas, Demo charges, Hell hounds (+variants) Kinda goes with the old city fight theme. Shame the Steel Legion don't get these weapons. I don't mind 'mixing and matching' regiments though, I think it will add to the city fight feel of the army especially when the paint scheme will bring them all together.
Cheers for input! Its highly appreciated!

to use a commissar leman russ you will need a copy/pdf file of imperial armour volume one, second edition, in which they are now an elite option. I myself play an imperial guard army with an allied armoured battalion attached to it.
personally i prefer platoons so i can get more boots to the ground however veterans are not something to be overlooked. I would recommend a mixture of both. for an armylist i recommend you check out the armylist section of the board and start from a list you like there but change it to your liking.besides ogryns there are almost no bad units in the impêrial guard codex so you can't really go wrong!

maybe a line of platoons with a hacker vets squad and Sly marbo hitting behind the enemy lines + another few vets squads in chimeras and Vendettas for specialised support? What points level would be needed to field a hacker + Marbo build?

both harker and marbo are nice "work alone" units so therefor don't have an exact point level. however i would recommand at least 1000 pts games, just so you can get enough boots on the ground as well!
