The question I have about infantry platoons is that in the codex it says 2-5 squads... point cost, weapons, and upgrades. So dose this mean the cost per squad or the cost of the whole platoon. If for the whole platoon then dose that mean if I give a squad no weapons and upgrades I can have the full 5 squads just for the cost of the platoon and the platoon leader?

The point cost for a infantry platoon can be confusing. So, let's break it down for you.
The point cost listed is per squad. So you have to pay that for each squad you want to have in your platoon. Add any special weapons or upgrades for a sergeant or such.
To lead a platoon you MUST also have a platoon HQ (this does not go against the number of HQ's you are allowed as it is bought with the platoon). The platoon HQ is usually a JSO
So after paying the cost you have 2-5 squads (20-50 men) plus a JSO to lead them (5men) Giving each platoon 25-55 men
So, to re-cap, a full squad will cost the points for each squad plus the cost of the JSO.

Ohhh it gets better trust me.
Once you get into it the army will cost not only the points but the money involved will start to add up as well.
Take your time build your army at your own pace, and look for the good deals. A lot of the young kids get into the game think that Guard are the best, and they are, but then the disillusioned youth sell their army when they can grasp how they are played and move to an army that will be more of a winning army for them. Only to have a good guard player show them the error of their ways.
The guard is not a forgiving army and you have to keep a cool head while your lines are falling apart around you. Any mistake you make is costly, but usually you can recover from one.
Might I suggest you read some of the tactica threads, as well as when you play look for the games you can get an even point match. 5th ed is going to change a lot of things for us so it is important that you are able to adapt to it.

lol i'm sticking with Guard i haven't made all the fluff for my Japanese themed Guard for nothing. It's my brother that needs convincing lol I just played a game with him today where he rushed his BA honor guard squad w/ chaplin and death company at my dug in men and I wiped out the entire honor guard squad in one turn. Just bad luck on his part since his tactical squads were just out of range. He says space marines sucks when if that honor guard had reached my men it would have been game over.

keep convincing him from the safe end of the lasgun. Termies go down in droves with them as well. I can't tell you how many times I have shot everything I had at my disposal at them only to have two squads of double tapping goodness bring them down.

A lot of the young kids get into the game think that Guard are the best, and they are . IG is THE army for advanced players. if you want "easymode" then any other army in 40k is for you. if you play guard you need mettle. your morale will be rocked to the core as you get beat harder than you ever thought is possible over and over, but if you want an army that'll make you think, plot, scheme, scratch with tooth and nail, make you not only understand battlefield tactics but actually force you to develop the discipline to make moves that feel wrong to the core but end up opening up the ultimate sweet shot on the enemy because of a succesfully executed strategy then IG is for you. we pay dearly when we take the field, we get beat in the face with a baseball bat until all of our teeth have cleared our face and landed in a pool of gore at our feet, and then we run you thru with our bayonets. guard is not pretty, it is not glorious, it is hard to maintain fluff because often we have no survivors except those who flee the field - if any make it at all. all that said, you will develop more as a strategist and tactician as a guard commander than as a commander of any other type of army in 40k. you will also want to sell your worthless piece of crud army more than with any other army in the game because the beatings you take will be so bad that you'll find they will commonly "send you to the wall." being "sent to the wall" is when you get beat so badly that you literally go to the wall where all the 40k minis are hanging and start looking at minis for a new army. I have literally lost count of the number of times I've been "sent to the wall" in the 5ish years I've been commanding my IG army. I still get beat with a baseball bat to the face commonly with my guard army, but at least I put up a better fight. I have learned alot, but I have alot more to learn, and this is after 5 years of gaming with my IG army. it's a hard road, and even a veteran guard commander is considered 'an easy win' for people most times (though there are some absolutely evil guard armies out there, but those are all armored company lists that aren't even allowed in tournaments anymore cuz they're so broken - that's not really an IG army, it's an armored company army. two totally different "codecei" as you will) anyway, I saw your thread in the pics forum - I like your paint scheme but make sure you're 100% in love with it or your road will be that much harder when you inevitably WILL want nothing but to sell off your army and get something you can win with. an ink wash might be a nice thing for your minis, as a side comment welcome!

I'm pretty use to getting my @ss handed to me as a Guard CDR. I know my love for the army has nothing to do with how it is played. I have been running my ever expanding list for 7 years now and I still get great satifaction when I set on the Field of Battle. Unlike TB, I have never even considered getting rid of my IG. Infact, I rather enjoy collecting models from other people that just want to give-up. That way I can modify and drive on with a much larger force. Just repaint and watch them get slaughtered.
As for Force Org, I like running true large Platoons with atleast 4 squads in each troops choice (not including the HQs). I know it is not a balanced Army but it looks great on the field.

I'd be interested in hearing how you make that much infantry a viable fighting force. perhaps post on it in the infantry forum?
