Hey all,
Mainly a Marine player (using Death Guard HH rules), but after reading Zulu Rising, a book about Isandlwana and Rorke's Drift, as well as having a love for anything Victorian, I really want to do a Praetorian IG list based on the 24th Infantry Regiment.
I'm yet to receive my copy of the IG dex, but this is a rough idea of what I'd like to do (based on my recollection of the IG dex): CCS - MoO, Power Sword, Plasma Guns Lord Commissar - Fist
Vets to represent Redcoats (British Army regulars): Vets - Plasma, Carapace Vets - Plasma, Carapace
Normal IG to represent the auxillary units, like the Natal Native Contingent or the Natal Police: 30 man blob with PCS. Mortars or Heavy Bolters. Maybe throw in a Commissar to each unit to represent British officers attached to them.
Heavy Weapon Squads Autocannons or Lascannons Maybe a Mortar Squad as well
Ideally I'd like to move to 1.5k with some Ratlings and a LR Punisher.
I know foot IG isn't hugely ideal now, but I play mainly for fluff (hence the Horus Heresy rules!). It will mostly be going against: Nids, Orks, CSM and Blood Angels.
Thanks for any help!

Foot Guard are awesome: commissar.proboards.com/thread/17880/guard-1500-pic-heavyBy not fielding any tanks you make any points your opponent has spent on anti-tank weapons a waste. What I failed to do in the above battle report was to bring enough anti-tank myself - had I swapped the auto-cannons and commissars for some lascannons I would have done fine (the commissars were kind of redundant since I had a Regimental Banner in the middle). The only issue with foot guard is that it takes a little longer to advance, but that isn't so bad as it gives us more time to shoot whatever we are advancing toward. The only other problem is that you can run out of LOS when placing so many models on the table, but you can also use this to your advantage by using barrage units, and you can also move squad 1 out of the way of a heavy weapon, it then fires in the shooting phase, then you move squad 1 by running it back in front of the heavy weapon again (only really useful if you have a unit or two that need to advance - but a great way to get a shot off with no penalty and then receive a cover save later!) Autocannons are good in squads as they get 2 shots and are so cheap it doesn't matter if you have to move and snap fire. Lascannons are better in dedicated heavy weapon squads so you can focus 3 guns on one target (and not waste 30 other guard having to shoot a tank with lasguns) Mortars are amazing... have lots! (In a recent game I didn't field any mortars - and I really noticed their absence) Final point - not sure about the Lord Commissar - I'd use the points to buy ratlings and a regimental banner.

Cool. Good to hear about mortars and LC's.
Is an all Vet foot army possible? Carapace for the Redcoat wannabes, and the camo cloaks for the auxillary types?

Unfortunately Veterans won't give you access to the heavy weapon squads.

Punishers are crap because of the 24" range on the pun gatling cannon. Take a LR exterminator with lascannon hull, heavy bolter side sponsons instead. Punishers are highly situational - I've used one to good effect mowing down a large mob of orks but the exterminator was instrumental and did more/ better damage overall. (I was running one sat next to the other).
Veterans on foot aren't my cup of tea either, especially with 'pace they end up being 2x more expensive than guard infantry platoons. There's no reason the praetorians couldn't be standard infantry (although without the 'pace) and then you could squeeze more into the list. Curious Constructs make excellent Praetorian style metal heads.
