Hi all, i have played fantasy for along time and i think its time for 40k now. Well, i like imperial guards most so i wanna start that. The first step for me is to buy the codex, but i wonder some things first. How is the army to play? much tactics? and my favorite models in the army is the ones with gas masks.... but i dont find them very often, are they still avalebal? i also like tanks.... i did hear about some new tankmodels, how are they different? Is it some things i must think about in the army selection? like some very good/bad units?
Thanks very much:)

you might be thinking of the death korps from forgeworld...thems the guys with the gasmasks, or you might be thinking of some older models called the steel legion whom also wear gasmasks.
and the tactics you use depends on the army you have be it mostly infantry of mechanized.

Welcome to the Forum, and to the Imperial Guard!
Forgeorld models are brilliant, but can end up being very expensive. Your tastes are sound, though; the old Steel Legion were some of the best IG done over recent years. If you're after the models, they are one of the most common types of IG floating around on Ebay and can be picked up quite cheaply. Again, with GW charging about $30 a squad, that can add up quite a lot.
Death Korps are the FW equivalent of Steel Legion, based on their models (WW1 Germans) but they are of a breathtaking quality. As with all models from GW, they cost a bomb, but you get everything you pay for.
As for rules, all the old sub-codexes (ie. Catachans, Armageddon etc) are technicaly out of date since 4th Edition Codex: Imperial Guard was released, since the latter contained the lauded Doctrines System, allowing you to customise your army with special equipment, drills, traits and so on. That said, most fair-minded players won't mind you mingling 3rd Edition Rules in, since the're almost the same.
My (humble) advice is to smack together a 500pt army with a small infantry platoon, and quite simply just play a few skirmishes and get the feel of your army, before expanding it any futher.
Just get a few models, try some paint schemes, and above all if you get stuck, just ask! There's a wealth of knowledge on the net and the Forum with superlative advice. Just make sure you keep us updated with pics etc!
