I played another game verse elder, this time against a wave serpent heavy list. I made some horrible mistakes mostly because I was not paying enough attention when he explained his army. I did put some good moves in though. We both threw lists together on the spot for a friendly game with no for knowledge of what the other was bringing. He wanted to play a bigger game so I took my Marines along. I mentioned using two flyers, which he was cool with. I don’t know the full details of his list, but I will try to be as exact as I can.
Eldar War Host (note from memory):

Farseer
Elites:
8 Fire Dragons with Exarch in Wave Serpent - Holofields
Troops
10 Dire Avengers with Exarch in Wave Serpent with Holofields and Bright Lance
10 Dire Avengers with Exarch in Wave Serpent with Holofields (farseer warlord, rolled guide prescience, and death mission, riding in this one)
5 Rangers
5 Rangers
Heavy Support
6 x Dark Reapers (other farseer attached, rolled guide, prescience, fortune)
Wraithknight with 2 Wraithcannons
Fire Prism with Holofield
His list was pretty tough, I forgot about jink and realized quickly how insanely tough to kill his vehicles would be. What really hurt, was not realizing which Wave Serpent held what. I thought they all had dire avengers. Rut Row Rhaggy….
Catachans:
HQ
Punisher Pask with Vanquisher partner
CCS 4 snipers
Primaris Psyker (Prescience)
Troops
3 x Infantry Squads with AC and Flamer
PCS with 4 flamers (riding in a Valk)
Veterans with 3 melta guns (riding in a valk)
Fast Attack
2 Valkyries (no upgrades)
Heavy Support
Basilisk
Manticore
Inquisition Detachment:
Inquisitor with Psy 1 (Prescience) attached to the PCS.
2 Servo Skulls
Raptor Chapter Marines
HQ
Librarian (Mental Fortitude)
Troops
5 x Marines
5 x Marines
Heavy Support
3 Centurion Devastators 2 with Grav Cannons, Sgt with Omniscope and Heavy Bolters
When I made this list, I thought you know what I have yet to use? Centurions Devs that took forever to make and magnetize. I don’t use my Raptors very often because they are a Forge World Chapter. I just met the guy I was playing against so using the forge world rules would have been rough. Lias Issodon the Chapter Master is ridiculously awesome and pairs great with the Cents, but I did not want to spring that one the guy. So I just played as Raven Guard. As a result of fitting that unit in I nerffed a lot of my other options. The Valkyries were naked so was Pask and his buddy and all the psykers were level 1. Also I couldn’t take my Sentinels, Ratlings, the MOO, or upgrades on the Marines. I said what the hell, I will go with it lets just try these Cents out.
We rolled for the game setup. Dawn of War, Emperors will, no night fighting. He won the roll of for terrain and then to pick table sides. Here is the map using vassal as a proxy for the real table:
On the top, there was a forest on the left, then some debris and a bigger area terrain with sandbags inside on the middle. On the right, there was another forest and a giant fantasy style building with a small tower on top. We counted it as just terrain with any unit going up to the top needing a full 6 inch move to make it. It was really tall and on top just counted as 4+ cover to be simple. On the bottom a small ruin on the left, a larger hill of chaos with some skulls and symbols on it. It was tall enough that you could not see infantry on the other size. On the right another small ruin. The bottom of the map barely had any terrain. Guess which side I was stuck with. We rolled for first turn he won.
Here was the deployment:
I was really stuck with no place to go on this one. So I tried to turtle up. I was afraid of those wave serpents and tried to use the only piece of terrain to get out of LOS. I really should have paid more attention. I did not even notice what was really where on his side and it was going to costs me. I also forgot to place my skulls and just dumped them anywhere in the middle of the table. I failed to seize and he started his first turn.
Turn 1:
Eldar
Knowing what my big threats were he moves his serpents up while the one with the farseer remained in the back. Wraithknight jumped out to get the centurions. I smartly put HB Sgt up front, but I should have thrown the librarian in behind him as he did nothing most of the game. The middle Wave Serpent moved flat out down to the left near my tanks and the other to the middle. The far right one moved down and the prism came down as well. He used guide on his prism and prescience on the dark reapers. His movement ensured both skulls disappeared. He then opened fire. Wave Serpents went into the Cents who tanked them taking only one. He decided to hit it with the knight and made two wounds one saved by cover the other taken on the already wounded Sgt. He then switch targets and hit with his prism on the Manticore, which made its cover save. Unfortunately, the Dark reapers also had a shot and managed to nail it. I made 2 saves, but the third penetrated and it exploded. The explosion was a 6 inches and I rolled tons of 5 and 6s to wound . I ended up losing a horde of troops as well as giving him first blood. Through some miracle everyone held, but I was off to a bad start.
IG
On my turn, I made one critical error. I did not realize the near wave serpent had fire dragons in it. If I did everything would have hit those guys. I used prescience on the Basilisk. Then I moved Pask up as well as the Centurions who hugged the wall to get out of LOS. Some guardsmen repositioned as well to cover holes in my army made by deaths.
Orders saw me using tank hunters twice to try to get some glances on the serpents using my autocannons. Holofields plus jink, means failure. I split Pask's fire thinking it would be a good idea to use both ignoring the lesson I just learned. Vanquisher penetrated the Prism, which made its jink. Pask scored 5 penetrating his on the nearby wave serpent. 5 dice rolls later it scored 1 glance thanks to holofields and serpent shields. I was then forced to fire the Centurions at it who pulled through and glanced it to death with their grav amps rerolls. I took some autocannon shots at the squad that popped out and took out 1. My Basilisk fired on his rangers, which in retrospect made zero sense since it would have destroyed his fire dragons easily. All his rangers made their cover save. And I finish my turn accomplishing near zero.
Here is the map:
Turn 2:
Eldar
Powers went off on the dark reapers and then failed the other. He moved this far right serpent closer to my line and then went into shooting right away. The prisms fired on the Vanquisher and failed to do any damage. Then the dragons his and I lost both tanks and gave up warlord. The rest of his fire went into the centurions. I made my cover save verse the wraith knight, but still ended up losing one and taking a wound on the remaining one. I lost some more guardsmens to some fire as well, but everyone held. At some point he remembered he forgot about his other unit of rangers that were supposed to infiltrate.
IG
Both Valkyries and a squad of marines came on. I rolled right on the outflank and put them right up the fire prisms butt. I push one Valkyrie up the middle with the PCS and Inquisitor inside to set up a flamer run on those rangers next turn. The other Valkyrie flew in from the bottom right corner diagonally right next to the wraith knight. I decided to grav chute my Veterans in because I realized if that far right serpent made it down there he could kill all those guys and contest the objective. They scored a direct hit and I was right up his butt as well. I did some repositioning and moved the Centurion to ensure he was in range with no cover. Prescience went off on the Basilisk. I use the ignore cover order to autocannon the right Serpent and did nothing. The other I used forward for the emperor on the far left unit and shot up the dragons, but did very little.
My shooting phase began. I opened up on the wraithknight with the remaining Centurion. Our hero managed to score 5 wounds in one volley. Thank you grav amps! I then shot it with two hellstrike missiles on the Valkyrie ending its life in one turn of shooting. I really couldn’t believe it. I used the other Valkyrie to shoot at the rangers, but did nothing. My veterans hit the Wave serpent with 3 meltas and it made 2 jink saves. The other managed to destroy his bright lance. My Marines did much better and destroyed the fire prism in one volley of bolters and a krak grenade. The Basilisk then fired and took out the fire dragons in one hit.
Here is a picture of the map:
Turn 3:
Eldar
At this point he realized that the Centurion and Basilisk had to go, but he had a lot of fire power left on the board so I think he thought he could take care of more than he realized. He opened the turn by walking his other rangers onto the board right behind the other group. And moved his right serpent farther down to my door step and dropped his unit off. From there shooting began. He used the Dire avengers to whittle down my Veterans who went to ground and made 3 6+ saves only losing 5. The snipers managed to kill the Centurion ending their menace to the board. His dark reapers fired at the PCS Valkryie, but luckily I made two 6s on Jink for the Penetrating hits. He then popped both shields to kill the Basilisk. The front serpent failed to glance. And the right serpent scored 2 glancing hits bringing it down to one hull point.
IG
At this point, the game was evening out. It had been very uphill battle, but I was in a decent position now as opposed to before were I just felt screwed. I still had a ways to go before anything close to a draw could happen. I prescience the Basilisk and moved the Librarian to join a nearby infantry squad. I hovered both Valkyries and dropped off the PCS with flamers ready on the Rangers. It was at this point I realized I left the Inquisitor with a PCS a unit, which got nothing from her buff (another blunder). The other moved neared back behind the rangers and aimed at the serpent. My squad of marines moved closer to the dark reapers and prepared to charge into the building.
Shooting began and orders ensured the bottom wave serpent wrecked. I opened fired on his dire avengers, but failed to do anything. My Basilisk dropped a shell on them and did a few wounds. The PCS annihilated both ranger squads costing him his objective. My marines made their charge and got into close combat with the dark reapers and their farseer. Scoring a few kills, but they held.
Here is a picture of the map:
Turn 4:
Eldar
At the start of turn 4, he buffed up his dark reapers with fortune and guide. His last serpent dropped its guys off who moved into position to retake his objective. His other dire avengers moved towards my infantry squads. He opened fire on the squad in the back because it still contained a flamer. Dropping it down to 2 models. He then fired with his serpent at my Basilisk which once again miraculously survived. His farseer dire avengers shot at my PCS. I immediately went to ground brining my cover to 3+. In another miraculous twist of fate, I had my Inquisitor in the front. She ended up tanking a lot of the wounds. By the time it was down it was the Inquisitor with one wound left and Platoon Commander left alive. In the assault, phase he tried to multi-charge my units on my objective. Because he whittled down his original target so much, they had an 11 in charge. He scored an 8 failing and losing a man to a lasgun over watch. The reapers and marines continued the fight each losing a man. Everyone else held their ground.
IG
My other Marines came on the board on the left and started their run to the objective. I measured it out and realized unless we made it to turn 7 I would never reach it even running. So I set them up to shoot. The Valkyries backed up both in hover mode to take out what they needed to. I prescienced the basilisk did some repositioning and opened fire. His farseer avengers took a few wounds and his last wave serpent went down. The dire avengers next to my objective were dropped to 4 models and I then charged in my rallied veterans. We made it with not an inch to spare. By the end of the turn it was 4 Veterans to 3 Dire Avengers. The dark reapers and marines fought on, marines losing 2 and the reapers 1. The marines failed morale and were caught in the sweep so the battle continued.
Here is a picture of the map:
Turn 5:
Eldar
He did not have much left to move at this point. His farseer team killed off my PC and Inquisitor and reclaimed his objective. He managed to get fortune off on the farseer. Combats continued and the marines were dropped down to 2 verse the exarch and other farseer. The veterans were 2 to 2 with the other dire avengers.
IG
At this point I had to kill his farseer team if I wanted to win, however it look doubtful with the fortune cover save and invulnerable save. If the game went on he could have contested my own objective and stolen it on other VPs. I thought it had to be the basilisk forgetting that the humble multilaser could have also instant killed the farseer. But with look out sirs and the like, it seem unlikely. I fired everything in. The marines killed one and the autocannon nailed one thanks to ignore cover. I then shot in the multilasers in and they took out the remaining 3 avengers. On my last gasp, the basilisk fired, and he rolled a 1 for his invulnerable save followed by a 2 slaying his warlord and securing me a victory. In the close combat the marines held their ground and a lone veteran survived.
Final Picture:
Aftermath
In the end, he had next to no troops left. However, that doesn’t tell the whole story. Really he was ahead the entire game. I had no right winning at all. I think the one mistake he made was not being aggressive enough with his far seer wave serpent. He put his knight forward thinking it was invincible when in reality Pask and the centurions would have eaten it for lunch and in fact did.
Afterwards, I thought about how it had become a transport battle. What is better a wave serpent or a Valkyrie? I never considered taking a naked Valkyrie before. They both cost around the same and serve the same function. The wave serpent is often thought of as being OP (probably is) and it is really the serpent shield that does it. However, the Valkyrie is similar in durability and utility. With rocket pods, it can put out a similar amount of damage and you can bring 9 of them. In the end, the Valkyries has less sting than the serpents after their missiles are gone. However, all his serpents died and my Valkyries lived. It is something to keep in mind. At the very least, I am slightly less afraid of them.
I threw this list together because I wanted to use a few units. Grav Centurions are pretty great, but they really need some support, I probably won’t take them without Lias. Pask end up doing nothing because I was foolish and threw his points away. As usually the old standbys did their jobs. Veterans are always awesome same with flamer PCS. I really need to model the heavy flamer in. The sniper CCS did not do much. It does have the advantage of costing next to nothing, still I was a little disappointed. In the same vein, the infantry squads didn’t accomplish much. Cover and shields were hard to crack though. I suppose they did hold the line, which is their main job. Lastly, I need to figure out how to use servo skulls properly, what a huge waste this time! Nuff said on that.
Thanks for reading!
