Wyvern with swappable weapons or how I learned to stop caring and pay for more bitz.
Here is a quick guide to making the weapons swappable on the Wyvern Hydra. It took a total of 12 magnets to do the job. The TLDR is go on a bitz seller and buy to other replacement mortar assemblies. Doing it with my method came out okay, but was a paint in the butt. The following is the dumb ass way to do it:
I decided to make little mortar rounds to stick in to the barrel to attach the end of the mortar. Unfortunately my phone died half way through so I didn't get all the pictures I wanted. Took me a week to get a new one. Anyway, first you want to place some magnets into the barrel of the weapon system. If you look at the mortar assembly, there are two rungs on the end.
Put some green stuff into the barrel here and make sure its flat, then insert a flat magnet in. You want to have it slightly in front of that second rung. (the one the arrow is pointing, slightly closer to the opening). This will make sure you mortar round doesn't have to be too long and the autocannon barrel will fit in to not move. Make sure the magnet is flat and all four are as even as possible with each other. Just let that set and then you can glue the barrel halves together.
Next you want to make the shells. I started by clipping off little circles pieces of sprue. I used this as the base of the shell and jammed a magnet into the bottom so it looks kind of like a primer.
Then I used green stuff to make little shells. As show in the picture.
The problem I ran into is that the shells were too small so I had to reinforce them and make them bigger. They ended up looking like little arrow heads. The SMART way to do it would be to use the end of the hydra autocannon barrel as a template and craft it from there, but as I stated I am dumb. Once you make the little shells simply glue them in mortar tips.
For the autocannon, chop off the nubs and insert a magnet, easy day.
Lastly, the ammo cases should fit on without help. If they don’t just throw some green stuff in and tighten the hold.
Here is the finish product. I used Catachan bitz for the guys. I chopped the map hand off that came in the box and used a Catachan arm which I similarly amputated (it’s the weird arm in the command box that doesn’t seem to fit anything). It syncs with the map hand well. I used the radio guy so he can be reading the target coordinates off to the gunner. The gunner I used a body of a Valkyrie gunner. They are armored so its like he is wearing extra protection when operating the gun. This one has the distinction of being almost entirely airbrush (vehicle chassie that is). It took around 20 mins using the ultra lazy man method that I have perfected. Around 10% percent had to be done by hand that took significantly longer. Then the Catachans themselves. Other than that, it is a straight forward build.
Bonus Bullgryns!
I just painted these guys. I am pretty happy how they turned out, but they were pretty easy because they are so much bigger than usual. I chose to leave the armor off because I think it looks lame with the tank tread. Also with the shields and the extras I think it comes across as +4 save.
I made one a black ogryn. I try to use 3 separate skin tones in my army. Usually its white dude, tan dude, black dude. In the grim darkness of the future everyone is holding hands under the rainbow of racial equality. Then they kill xenos.
"Uhhhhh, De commissar say he don't care whos I was until I puts on da mask." The glow effect on the Invulnerable save brute shield looks way better in the picture than in reality.
I made a custom counts as priest. I don’t like the priest models so I came up with my own that is like a commando veteran Catachan. He has a partner figure who is similar. This one has a poisoned blade and a Tyranid skull to act as his Rosiarius. His invulnerable save comes from his balls o' steel. Also a robot arm because why not.
