Hi all,
I first got interested in playing 40k late 5th ed. I went to a few local club nights, but then personal issues prevented me taking it further. Around 6th ed coming out I bought a few bits and bobs -battle force, some extra infantry and a lrbt. But again, I never went much further. But I have hung around, stalking forums and learning what I can without actually playing.
Now another new edition has come and the introduction of Astra Mlitarum, I'm looking seriously at the hobby again. I had a list that I was working towards for 1500pts.
HQ CCS H.Flamer, Vox
Troops Plat.1 Pcs Vox, Autocannon
Infs sqd 1 Vox, Autocannon
Infs sqd 2 Vox, Autocannon
Plat2 Pcs Flamer, vox
Infs sqd1 Vox, Flamer
Infs sqd 2 Flamer, vox
Vets 3 plasma, plasma pistol srg Chimera
Vets 3x melta Chimera
Hellhound
2 x Sentinel (might split)
Lrbt Lr dem Lrbt. (All seperate units)
My questions are basically - are melta/plasma vets still as widely used as the appeared to be? Is my lack of flyers an issue at this pts level? Is my lack of Anti-air going to hurt? Is there anyone on here from the Cardiff area who can help me get further involved in the hobby?
Thanks in advance guys..... (Sorry this became quite long!)

Oh, think I missed a commissar from the Autocannon platoon.

The list should stand up okay though the lack of AA is very noticeable, however, since you are not putting lots of points into killing aircraft you have been able to spend well elsewhere.
Just make sure you cover the LRBT rear armour with good scenery (such as table edge or building wall) that way the enemy aircraft can't get sneaky shots.
I would also recommend trying to field a few more lascannon - these provide the best combo of range and high strength.

Just one thing I noticed was that in both platoons both squads have voxes. If you want to blob them regularly, then you can remove the two extra voxes and save a couple points.
Vets in Chimeras aren't quite as all powerful as they used to be, but they're still solid choices. Though if you could, it would be nice to use more special weapons in your CCS, especially ones that rely on BS, since it's a large number of BS4 models that can carry fancy weapons.
Otherwise, it seems pretty nice. At 1500 many players will take flyers, though you should play around if you can and see how flyer-centric your local meta is. Something easy to fit in is an Aegis Defense Line. It's pretty nice cover, and you can slap on a quad gun or lascannon to shoot at those pesky flyers with one of your vets from your CCS.

at 1500 points, in this current rendition of 40k, you're going to run into flyers, pretty often. The only real solution for Guards is to bring their own flyers, or tons and TONS of fire power. I would invest in a vendetta, as 3 twin linked lascannons that hit at regular BS can really be effective at taking down an FMC or enemy flyer. Just keep it moving and jink when you have to. Better that is miss its shots and stay alive to provide a nice distraction than to die in a fiery blaze of hell just because you wanted it to be accurate next turn
I would take it easy on the flamers. Guardsmen often die before they close enough to use them, and I find that a grenade launcher will get more points worth for you. Hellhound is a good replacement for having a ton of flamers, though. It can shoot further, and is stronger and has a better armor pen. If you want flamer templates, use scout sentinel squadrons, equip them with heavy flamers, and outflank them right near an enemy's dug in squad and just roast those gakkers
Your vets in chimeras are far better off taking tauroxes and just pay the 5 points for smoke launchers. They are fast, so you can move Flat OUt and get an extra 6" of movement out of them, plus the Taurox is cheaper, and equipped with a twin linked autocannon, giving you a little bit heavier fire power than the multilaser on the chimera. Taurox's just seem to be a better choice nowadays, I'm thinking
Additionally, plasma has a nasty habit of killing your very expensive (points wise) veterans, even with carapace. Personally, I restrict my plasma weapons to command squads that have carapace armor AND a medic, and I still usually only put the plasma weapon on a lord commissar or senior officer, someone with multiple wounds, so that if they roll that annoying Gets Hot! bullcrap, and fail their armor save and their feel no pain save, they still have wounds left over. Plasma is very finicky and can end up just ruining your game. Veterans are far more effective when equipped with melta guns, that won't explode in their face.
Another way you could get your plasma-fix is to take a Leman Russ Executioner with plasma sponsons. They are far more likely to survive the Gets Hot crap, as they have 3 hull points, and even when they roll a 1, there's still only a 50% chance that it'll do any damage to the tank. The tank I mentioned above will have 5 S7 Ap2 templates at quite a long range (have to be careful how much information I reveal, or GW will come knocking at my door and arrest me! ahaha). Executioners are a great way to get your long range Terminator slaying fire power into your army, and a lot safer. Also, armored sentinels can take plasma cannons for an actually pretty decent price, so you could just spam a few of those, and also have a lot higher chance of surviving the overheats than a regular guardsman
