For this formation do they have to all me baneblade or can they be different variants of them? as i'm sure i read somewhere that the shadowsword is classed as a close enough match to be counted as a baneblade for the formation?

I'm pretty sure ruleswise they have to be Baneblades... but talk to your opponents. No reason in fluff why they'd all have to be. You could have a company of any three you wanted.

I like that answer. Most times super heavies are used there is a mix of at least three different ones Sent from my GT-I9300 using Tapatalk

For this formation do they have to all me baneblade or can they be different variants of them? If you're asking about 5th edition Apocalypse then the answer is no, sadly. I was reading the Steel Fury rules the other day and it has to be Baneblades because you only get 2 special rules out of the formation, one of which is pretty meh but the other is quite astounding. - The first rule gives your baneblade cannons a cumulative +1 to damage per tank for every baneblade cannon that has hit, from the same formation. So example : your 3 baneblades are shooting at a big Ork stompa, the first cannon hits and penetrates, rolls for damage with +2 (one for AP 2), the next one hits rolls for damage but with +3 on the chart, then the third baneblade cannon hits and it gets +4 on the damage chart. - The second rule is just morale related; the enemy have to take leadership tests because of the shaking ground. Meh! Anyway the point is that to take steel fury you have to pay the cost of 10 tactical marines and a veteran sgt on top of the actual super heavy points cost and they'll be in a squadron so that limits their deployment. If you were to just take the three superheavies you could spread them around more. Another point is that fielding steel fury, the rules force you to shoot your bbl cannons all at the same target for the overkill factor but against some infantry heavy lists you'll end up overkilling groups of infantry and leaving your tanks too close together. Again, I'm reading from the older 5th edition apocalypse books so I don't know if the 6th edition apocalypse books changed the unit composition or types of tanks.
