Hello all!
I have been playing tyranids for two years now. I truly enjoy them, but have been trying to branch out into a second army. Two I have tried but failed to get into were blood angels and chaos daemons. The friend that i play with regularly plays orks and CSM. I was reading through some pages of the lexicanum and became instantly inspired by the wars on Armageddon...Yarrick and the Steel Legion 339th "iron heads" fluff were among my favorite reads. I decided to create an "iron heads" themed steel legion. I will be sticking to all GW models. (I know the limited range of models, but I play tyranids...I don't care.) I want to keep it mech, but also keep the units as veterans of steel legion. I realize the cost, don't care about other model lines. I just want to make it fluffy, so my friend and I can forge some HARD narratives. Codex should be in my hands by Wednesday at the latest. What should I get for troop sizes? Going for as small as 500pts up to 2000pts

A core of 100 guard should keep you happy for now. You'll be spoilt for men at 500 points and starting to feel the pinch at 2000. Since you are playing mech vets you won't need as many men as footslogger players so 60 might also work but if you get 100 you will be able to play lists that aren't mech vet at lower points which could help keep things interesting. 100 men should also protect you a bit against GW dropping Steel Legion from their stores (which will shoot ebay prices through the roof).

First off, grab as many Steel Legion trooper boxed sets and heavy weapons as you can. If you're running all veterans, get the lascannon heavy weapon team rather than heavy bolters, because they'll get far more use out of it. Also grab some of the Steel Legion plasma gunners. A few years back, GW stopped producing the metal Steel Legion, Mordion, Tallarn and Valhallan miniatures, but brought them back about a year ago. You never know when it'll happen again. So guardsmen are your TOP priority right now. You can fill in the Chimeras later.
For a good starting mech vest list, try the following
H.Q: Company Command Squad Officer w/ Power sword Heavy flamer, Plasma gun Chimera 165
Troops: 10x Veterans in Chimera 2x Melta guns 145
Troops: 10x Veterans in Chimera 2x Melta guns 145
Troops: 10x Veterans in Chimera 2x Melta guns 145
Heavy Support: Leman Russ Battle Tank (cannot post bare-bones points costs, as risk of getting the forum shut down)
This list will bring you to an exact total of 750 points, gives you a tank with a large S8 ordnance blast and a heavy bolter, 4 chimeras which you should equip with multi lasers and heavy flamers, or heavy bolters and heavy flamers, 30 veterans with 6 meltas between them for popping annoying ork vehicles as well as killing the "big uns", and a command squad with another high strength high AP flame template and plasma, for dealing with mega armored nobz and such. The power sword seemed appropriate from a fluff wise standpoint, because I see lots of pictures of Steel Legion officers carrying them, and they seem to enjoy the use of flamers and plasma. This isn't a list designed to play in tournaments, but I think it will suit your needs just fine.
After you get this list together, go ahead and add Yarrick and attach him to the company command squad, or one of your veteran squads, or make a foot slogging platoon (in the fluff, the Steel Legion do often get out of their Chimeras and fight on foot, especially after extended periods of time when they start to run out of fuel), and attach Yarrick to that platoon
After that, definitely add more tanks. I recommend a hellhound or 2, and for tanks, more leman russes or maybe demolishers, and some artillery. Definitely steer clear of air support because it doesn't fit the Steel Legion theme, unless you want them to represent and attached Navy unit who is offering support to your Legion men

I'll just add that the steel legion models are lovely and it always looks as fantastic as it is rare to see a full army of them when they've been painted well.

I am not an amazing painter, but I do plan to take my time on them and do the traditional color scheme. May add some Cadian shock trooper for filler as it fits in the Armageddon fluff. Can't quote where, but that will come later. First and foremost is getting biddies and mech for the 339th.

A lot of Imperial forces fought with the Steel Legion on Armageddon. You'll be just fine with Cadians, and hey you don't have to be an amazing painter because it sounds like this project is inspiring you, take your time like you said and bother some of the people here for tips and feedback (epecially that wastrel Cosmic )

And the Ash Wasters, so Tallarns work too.

Ok, I made some trades on bartertown and am getting 7 chimeras between the trades. Probably too many, but I plan on converting three into hellhounds to fill my fast attack. I am also getting a Valkary though trade just to have one. Collecting steel legion models. Do many people run plasma and Grenade launchers? Are there loadouts I can get away with not using ever?

Bartertown, I will have to check that out. Never heard of it before. Website, I assume?
Honestly, if you want a big army, 7 hell hounds is perfect. You have enough chimeras for 6 squads of veterans, and 1 company command squad, so if you do want to buy hellhounds individually, then you could do that as well. Maybe just buy Forgeworld turrets so you can interchange them and keep your options open.
It's good to have a Valkyrie, even more so a Vendetta, because taking a Hydra could potentially be a waste of points if your opponent doesn't have air support
As for loadouts on veterans, plasma is better on units with carapace armor, since over heating is a Murphy's Law kind of thing. It'll only happen on your squishy guys ahaha.
Grenade launchers are nice and cheap, but I only run grenade launchers en masse, like in special weapon squads or cheap veteran squads. 3 blast markers is always better than 1! Also, krak grenades have the potential to penterate Av10 and glance AV11, so against super light armor, lots of grenade launchers are a cheap way to knock off a few hull points, albiet not really a reliable one
I think for Steel Legion, since they'll be all mechanized, you should definitely run veterans with flamers and melta guns. Melta for tank popping, flamers for infantry killing. Try to find a way to convert some flamers into heavy flamers for veteran squads
