I recently watched a game demo of Bolt Action on Beasts of War. It is a WW II game done by two former GW guys and they use a cool way of doing their turn sequence that I thought it might be fun to try in 40K. In Bolt Action each player has a same colored die for each unit in their army which they place together into a bag or container. So if I had seven units and my opponent had 6, I would place seven red dice and he would put six white dice into the same non transparent container/bag. One player would then reach into the bag and randomly draw out a die. If it was a red die I would then activate a unit of my choosing and they would execute their turn (move, shoot/run, assault, etc). If the die was white my opponent would get to activate a unit. After the first unit is done a second die is drawn, if it is red I get to choose another unit if it is white my opponent would choose a unit. This continues until all the dice are drawn. At the end of the turn one die for each remaining unit is placed back into the bag and the second turn commences.
I was intrigued and am planning on purchasing the Bolt Action rule book for all the details. Has anyone tried something like this before and if so how did it work? I think it could lead to a whole new range of strategy and tactical considerations and seems more realistic than a turn based sequence. You could have a bunch of units activate early but then your opponent would get a bunch in a row. You'd have to be more careful about what you did with units because you wouldn't know whether or not you'd be moving next, etc.
What do you guys think?
