So, probably an obvious answer but are you able to elect to fire barrage if the target is still in sight? I always have but i'd like to know if it's a thing or not.

yeah, indirect fire is just an option, direct fire follows the usual place template scatter (los=bs reduction) and wound etc...

for guard in particular you have a lot of barrage stuff, anything that fires shells, (mortars, grenades, missiles etc) classified as barrage are as above ^^^^ but remember these weapons now calculate wounds from the centre of the template not the nearest models to simulate the shells landing ontop of the squad etc rather than say a battle cannon shell which is fired directly or horizontally strait into the face of the enemy unit.
