Hey guys, first attempt at a decent list and funnily enough my first post on this forum! Please let me know what you think HQLord Commissar TROOPSInfantry Platoon: PCS: -Heavy Bolter -Heavy Flamer -Standard Infantry Squad x2: 2x Flamer 2x Heavy Bolter Veteran Squad: 2x Melta -Chimera: Dozer Blade, Heavy Stubber FAST ATTACKScout Sentinel Squadron: -2x Scout Sentinel -2x Autocannon Tactics:
Basically the Lord Commissar joins the PCS which, with an infantry squad on either side, goes down the middle/hold objectives. The Sentinels rush up one side and shoot at light vehicles/infantry from a covered position whilst the Veterans in the chimera head up the either side and attack strong units/vehicles and try to take an objective. Please let me know what you think, cheers

I like AutoCannons much better than heavy Bolters, but the main change I would suggest is tactics. All of your units are extremely fragile... ordinary bolter fire can kill everything in your list (the Chimera is only safe if it never exposes its sides). I would not run any of your units forward unless it is the Veterans, and only if they are required to meltagun something special, or take an objective. Stay in cover and hunker down.
At 500 points your options are a bit limited. When you expand to a larger force, I recommend using a Senior Officer as your HQ so you can enjoy the full benefits of the Orders system.

Thanks for your feedback, I'll keep the platoon and the sentinels in cover. As for the Heavy Bolters, I already have one model built with a Heavy Bolter but two still on the sprue. Should I use the Heavy Bolter for the PCS and give the two squads Autocannons, or a different combination?

Infantry Platoons are most powerful when you group all the squads together into one big blob. Orders from officers, blessings from friendly psykers, and the special rules of characters like Commissars and Priests are a lot more effective when 30-50 men are affected instead of just 10.
The whole blob should have the same heavy weapons, since they will all be shooting the same targets. Any odd weapons can be given to the Company Command Squad or Platoon Command Squads, since they are free to shoot at different targets. You can even give cheap heavy weapons to Veterans. If your melta Vets find themselves standing around with the gunline, or parked on an objective, a BS4 heavy bolter could easily pay for itself in one burst. I have been known to give my Grenadiers autocannons even though the squads are intended to operate at meltagun ranges.
I also like to use autocannons for my Infantry Platoon, since Strength 7 is good enough to kill tanks and monstrous creatures if you give them the order "Bring it Down!". Though, there is something to be said for using lascannons with "Fire on my Target!" since Strength 9 shots that ignore both armor and cover can kill some of the nastier things in the game.

Later on if you are still playing 500 points and feeling like a change try getting a russ into a 500 point list It can be quite amusing.
