Alright boys and girls, I need some assistance with painting my guardsmen. My latest project requires a sort of blue-gray for my fatigues, something like the Forgeworld DKoK studio army's uniforms. Something like this. Now, I was wondering if I could achieve something similar with a basecoat of Shadow Gray (The Fang) with some blended highlights up to Codex (Dawnstone) or Fortress Gray (Administratum Gray)? As it stands, the plan would be to basecoat with Shadow Gray and wash it with a black wash, and then glaze the highlights and whatnot. I don't own Shadow or Codex Gray anymore, and I'd rather not buy a couple pots of paint to see if they work and then never use them again. Am I in the ballpark, or should I be trying something else altogether? And, as always, I'm too lazy to see if this has been answered already in the annals of the forum, so I must beg your forgiveness.

Personally for a blue grey uniform I would paint a base coat of a blue grey like the fang, apply a very sparing wash in the fold lines with a blue wash, slightly watered down, then do a thin highlight with the same color. I don't believe in mixing if you're going for table ready, nor do I believe in highlighting a lighter color over a darker one. The contrast ends up being too think. I simply darken things with a wash to add shadow and then over brush my highlights in, creating a fading effect, from dark to light. I will take a picture of my men's desert uniforms when I, home from the holidays

The colours in IF's link doesn't look like the Fang, it looks more like just a normal codex grey or Mechanicus Standard grey with a lighter highlight.
Personally I'd recommend starting from Dark Reaper and highlighting 50/50 The Fang and Dark reaper, which is what I did for my Space Wolves. Dark Reaper is the perfect blue/ grey base, I reckon.

Well, I'd honestly forgotten about this post a while ago. I wanted a little blue, but the Fang was too dark and too blue. I ended up painting the uniforms Celestra Gray, washing with Nuln Oil and then going over the raised bits with a watered down Celestra again. Turned out brighter than I originally had in mind, but I like it better.
And maybe it's just my monitor, but the top layer on his trench coats doesn't look like codex gray again. I dunno what he used, but I'm happy with how mine are turning out. So all's well that ends well. Thanks for the help anyway, guys.
