After a somewhat lengthy hiatus from Warhammer (intense dislike of new rules, dislike of prices, general dislike of GW etc.) I've returned to the hobby and want to get back into gaming.
Are infantry lists still viable? When I last played with the old codex I ran a power blob list with 2 chunky, commissar backed platoons with a few sneaky sentinels in support. I originally ran a basilisk in the list but was having issues with tanks. I've dropped the basi and one of the infantry squads to fit in 2 lascannon HWS. Any other advice you could give me?
Keep in mind that these are all using the old cadian metal models so there isn't a grenade launcher model available. HQ CCS - lascannon, vox, MoO (105)
Commissarsx2 - powerfist (100)
Troops Platoon 1 (395) PCS - 4xflamers (50) IS - power weapon, melta bombs, meltagun, vox (85) IS - power weapon, melta bombs, meltagun (80) IS - power weapon, meltagun (75) HWS - lascannons (105)
Platoon 2 (320) PCS - 4xflamers (50) IS - power weapon, melta bombs, meltagun, vox (85) IS - power weapon, melta bombs, meltagun (80) HWS - lascannons (105)
Fast Attack Scout Sentinel - autocannon (40) Scout Sentinel - autocannon (40)
Total 1000pts

seems like a nice list.
as the 7th edition enjoys missions with highly variable objectives (the maelstrom missions) there is a tenancy toward smaller more mobile units.
I believe you have a decent number of units to be able to spread and reach the objectives without to many problems.
I like that you have focused your units on specific roles.
Personally I'd fit in another CCS with MoO instead of the 3rd squad in the platoon (reducing it to 2 squads).
This way you have 2 large blast ordnance S9 Ap3 terror inducing (too the opposing player) random as heck explosions per turn and a whole load of boots.
Your list is very similar to the ones I draft, though I tend to feature missile launchers with Flakk missiles: they suck at killing AV14 but are useful vs planes. (I would probably reduce the number of commissars or sentinels in order to squeeze them in).
Psykers will enjoy your lack of psychic defense but psykers are deviant heretics who shall burn or be damned by the warp.
good stuff.. let me know how it fares!

This is a rather solid list. The only change that I would make, and it's completely up to you, is drop the voxs and the sentinels and pick up two more commissars and two priests. You may have to drop some melta bombs too to get this to work out. The reason I suggest this is that your CCS will most likely be sitting back, firing it's long range AT weapons, and giving orders to your HWTs. The vox won't do much for you platoons if the are going to be charging up the field away from your CCS. Now I added two more commissars so you could put them with your HWTs this way they can take orders on LD9 instead of LD7. I feel that making sure they receive orders is more important tht a few extra Autocannon shots. The priests I added to make your blobs fearless and to give them hatred. This will help you out quite a bit when assualtin vehicles.

interesting suggestion gamma; I thought you were going to put the extra commissars into the blobs to add to the close combat potential, which is something I do when making assault blobs: priest + 1 commissar for each squad.
the sentinels offer outflank which can upset your opposing player's deployment and keep them on their toes as they aren't sure where you'll arrive; this can be very useful, as can the rear armour shots they are likely to get.

I played against an IGMB member at a tournament a few weeks ago (which by the way, was completely an accident, I had no idea he was going to be there). He ran 2 infantry squads with lascannons, and they didn't hit anything all game. What I recommend is finding the points to squeeze in 2 veteran squads with a lascannon in each, give them camo cloaks and sit them in a ruin near your CCS with as many of the lasgun carrying fools in front of the cannons as possible. Use your commander to issue the ignore cover order or the tank hunter order to get that swanky re roll when try to Pen
Also, heavy weapons squads can be directly targeted, and a 2 wound, 3 toughness model is very easy to insta-gib, and you will find yourself without any lascannons against a long ranged army, especially Tau with their damn Missile Sides (tons and tons of S7 Ap4 missile that ignore cover. They instant kill guardsmen, penetrate every single type of infantry armor we have in our codex, and ignore our best friend: Cover)
An infantry list is viable, but generally relies on tons of heavy weapons and veterans with melta guns to do all the work

I like using blobs as my heavy weapons base over veterans for orders. I think that being able to order two units of three Lascannons rather than two units with only one lascannon even if it has higher BS. In my opinion veterans are used for their ability to take special weapons.
